NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Community is a core value at LEAD. We strive to provide a sense of community, connection, and care at LEAD for all of our students. Recent events have illuminated how much work we have to do to ensure that all of our students feel connected to their school community and feel that it is a safe, secure and welcoming place to be. Our community is hurting from racist statements that were posted online by a small group of students at a Park Hill South High School event last week. Our LEADers are Panthers and Trojans and these events impact all of us as a LEAD community and as members of the Park Hill School District Community.
Dr. Cowherd shared in communication to our district a few days ago the following statement:
We do not tolerate discrimination or harassment in the Park Hill School District and have very specific policies to respond when these things happen:
- We have a Board of Education policy that specifically prohibits discrimination, harassment and retaliation. This policy says "students who violate this policy will be subject to discipline, which may include suspension or expulsion."
- We also have a Board policy on civility that prohibits "attacks regarding a person's race, gender, nationality, religion, disabling condition or any other personal characteristic."
We have been seeking to hear concerns and experiences from all of our students and families, including holding a discussion at our quarterly Parent Advisory Meeting last Monday evening, and holding an open discussion for students through Community Time on Tuesday. This is the beginning of a process to fully understand our current status, challenges and opportunities for growth. We would like to continue to hear from our students, staff and families about their thoughts, experiences, and hopes for our shared future. I will be available for individual family conferences during our Family/ Facilitator conferences next week. We will soon be forming a LEAD Community Committee to partner with students, families, and staff about how we can work together and learn from experiences such as this to make ourselves better moving forward and to realize our aspirations of a kind, caring community for all that celebrates our differences and appreciates, looks out for and cares for one another.
Home High School Assemblies
*Our practice has been that LEAD students directly participating as members of sports, activities, and musical ensembles participating or being recognized have attended home high school assemblies. This occurred both today and last week.
*LEAD originated as a result of overcrowding in our home high schools. Gym capacity at assemblies is included as one challenge of facilities being stretched beyond capacity by crowding. That is the reason home high school assembly attendance for LEAD students has been limited to active participants. Prior to COVID, we held our own LEAD spirit assemblies, which have been very popular.
*Gym crowding for indoor assemblies will still mean limited attendance for LEAD students moving forward, as it has in the past. There are many opportunities unique to LEAD students, but we recognize that there are certain trade-offs and limitations as well.
*For any future outdoor home high school assemblies, we will provide transportation for all students choosing to attend the home high school assembly.
*Like many things at LEAD, the logistics of special activities (like assemblies) can be very complicated. We will be developing processes to ensure that students have the option to attend outdoor assemblies at their home high schools if they would like to do so in the future.
