800 WING PROGRESS
Curriculum Night, Tuesday, 9/27 at 6:00 pm
Columbia River will host Curriculum Night on Tuesday, 9/27. Parents and families will be able to attend each of their student’s classes for a short informational “class”. Student schedules will be available in the Lower Commons if needed. Curriculum night is intended to be an introduction to your student’s classes, and is not the intended time for individual conferences. For space reasons, we are asking families to not bring their students with them. Below is the evening’s schedule.
Off Campus Pass Reminder
Off Campus Lunch Passes may be issued to students in the 11th or 12th grade with parent permission. Students must complete an Off Campus form, with parent signature. Students are expected to make sure they return to campus on time, so they do not miss class time. Students in 9th and 10th grade are NOT allowed to leave campus at lunch.
Rapid Response Returns for 22-23
During the 2022-2023 school year, we will again be on the Rapid Response Schedule for most Mondays.
Rapid Response is an additional period added into the school day on most Mondays. The Rapid Response period is time set aside for students to get additional help, participate in enrichment activities, or catch up on missed school assignments. Each week, the Rapid Response period rotates, allowing students support in each of their classes.
Click here to view the Rapid Response Schedule for Semester 1.
River’s Mock Trial Team
River’s Mock Trial Team begins Thursday, September 29 in River’s Gallery from 6-7:30 pm. Mock Trial is a competitive team that is coached by local attorneys. The team competes at the county and state level and is sponsored by Washington’s YMCA Youth and Government Program. Students interested in acting, debate, public speaking and/or the law are encouraged to join the team. You can find more information here and join the student mailing list here.
Arrive by 25 is back!
Once again this year we want to focus on the importance of students arriving on time at the start of the school day. Students arriving at school with time to spare have the luxury of settling in, preparing their class materials and focusing their minds on the lessons to come.
While classes officially start at 7:30 am, our goal is to have the majority of our students in the school building by 7:25 AM, so they can start their classes on time and ready.
This month we will be encouraging all students to “Arrive by 25” - to be here at Columbia River no later than 7:25 AM. Look for random recognitions and prizes for students who are here by 25.
We would like to have our entire student body here on time. So do your part, whether that means setting your alarm a little earlier, or leaving the house with a little more time. And don't forget to - Arrive by 25!
Free PSAT for all 10th Grade
This year in an effort to maintain and increase access and equity for all students, Vancouver Public Schools will again pay for all 10th grade students to take the PSAT (Preliminary SAT). The PSAT is a practice college entrance exam most closely linked with the SAT.
Columbia River will be hosting the PSAT for it's students on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. NOTE: THIS IS A DATE CHANGE. Testing will occur during the school day at Columbia River, starting at 7:30 am. All 10th grade students will be automatically registered and expected to participate in the PSAT, unless they complete the OPT OUT form. This is a great opportunity for students to take a version of the practice college admissions exam.
The PSAT will also be open to 11th grade students by invitation only. This group will include 11th graders who had a NMSQT qualifying score in 10th grade and students new to VPS who did not test last year.
10th grade students wishing to Opt Out should use this link and complete the form.
All registered students and their parents/guardians will receive PSAT practice information and updates via email.
Questions about the PSAT should be directed to Kim Johns (kim.johns@vansd.org) or Rob Duncan (rob.duncan@vansd.org)
