Trench Warfare Reenactment
Trench Warfare
Immigration Day
In 7th Grade- Learning is Doing!
In 7th grade Social Studies we conducted our Trench Warfare Reenactment. This allows the students to experience for themselves the difference trenches made. Arming their troops with marshmallows, the Generals engage in two battles- the first without trenches and the second behind an entrenchment of desks. The reflections of this activity are quite interesting to read! Among them:
"The battle was over really fast without a trench. Everybody was dead! Maybe the Civil War would have been over sooner if we didn't use trenches."
"It was confusing. I couldn't remember who my General was.""
"I forgot what I was fighting for."
"With marshmallows, it was hard to know when I was dead. Maybe it would be better if you can't eat the ammunition."
Stay tuned for our Immigration Day coming up shortly. Here are a few pictures from last years' event ....where Learning is Doing!
Support Norterra Canyon in the fight to Spread the Word to End the Word…
“Spread the Word to End the Word” is an ongoing effort by Special Olympics and their supporters to inspire respect and acceptance through raising the consciousness of society about the R-word and how hurtful words and disrespect can be towards people with intellectual disabilities. This campaign is youth-led to communicate the harmful effect of the R-Word (retard/retarded) and remove it from daily use. Norterra Canyon is encouraging our parents and students to take the pledge, sign their names on a R-Word banner and help spread the word to end the use of the R-Word in our community. Please visit www.r-word.org for more information.

State Testing Coming Soon!
Make every effort to arrive on time on testing days. To prevent disrupting a testing environment, late students may not be able to join a testing session that has already started. Testing areas are secure, so parents and other visitors will not be allowed to volunteer or otherwise visit these areas during testing. We apologize for any inconvenience, but just mean to honor the ethical guidelines established for standardized testing.
We do what we can to minimize test anxiety in our school. Students in each class take practice tests on the AzMERIT website to familiarize themselves with the computer based format. We send the message that we are well prepared for the test. Please support us with this message having positive conversations about testing with your child. We simply want them to focus and try their hardest to show what they know.
You can find school testing schedules and read more about state testing on this page provided on the DVUSD website.

DVUSD Honor Band Festival
Congratulations to band director Ms. Belliveau and the NC students who were nominated for their excellent work ethic and musical ability to perform at this year's DVUSD Honor Band Festival at Deer Valley High School on Wednesday, February 22nd. The students attended rehearsals and clinics all day, culminating in an evening performance attended by parents, administrators and band directors from all across the District. David Kuhns, one of the clinicians, praised the band directors and students as follows, "Thanks for your help in making the honor groups happen last night. The 7-8 kids were the best prepared honor group I've worked with in recent history...we had very few notes to chase, thanks to your efforts."
