Building Connections Through Communication!
A Super Special "Shark Shout Out!"
Dear Mr. Burkhead,
I wanted to share with you an example of leadership and community spirit that is abundant among some of your newest students....
Last Sunday, several Shark students joined together as Team EmmaBelle trekked through the streets of Boston in the annual Jimmy Fund Walk for Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
The team was lead by co-captains and name-sakes, 8th grader Isabelle Coughlin and her sister, 6th grader Emily. For the past seven years, Team EmmaBelle has participated in the walk to support neuroblastoma research at Dana Farber. Neuroblastoma is a rare childhood cancer that Emily courageously battled for 18 months from the ages of four to five.
Under Isabelle’s co-leadership, Team EmmaBelle has flourished to 94 members (about a dozen are MRHS peers that Isabelle has recruited), and has raised over $68,000 for this year alone.
Isabelle’s compassion and understanding, and experience with the disease has come in handy as she has leant support to long-time friend and 8th grader Leah Nash. The two girls share many things in common, but more uniquely than most: Leah also has a younger sibling who has battled neuroblastoma. Leah’s six year old brother, Jesse, a kindergartner at Chatham Elementary, has been treated at Dana Farber for the past two and a half years. Leah joined Team EmmaBelle three years ago and has benefited from the support of a strong team with excellent fundraising strategies that can directly impact Jesse’s future treatment options at Dana Farber.
The Shark students who are a part of Team EmmaBelle should be highly honored, not only for demonstrating their excellent leadership skills, but also for rallying spirit and showing support for their peers who’s families deal firsthand with the challenges of a cancer battle.
Isabelle and the Team EmmaBelle sharks definitely deserve a shout out! Would you please share this with the school community? And if you find it appropriate, could you add the link for donations (perhaps people reading this shout out will become interested in helping out)

Thanks so much,

Chris Herren to visit MRHS Monday
MRHS is pleased to announce that Chris Herren will be visiting us Monday morning October 3, 2016 to share his story about addiction and recovery with our students & staff. Please see Mr. Herren's intro below. As we continue to proactively educate our students on the dangers of drug use and abuse, we believe this powerful message will begin necessary dialogue here at school and at home so that we may help educate our students and eradicate this serious community/state and national problem.
Following the presentation (see link below for presentation outline) our staff will coordinate classroom discussion with guided questions from our counseling department to debrief from the assembly. We will also have our counselors, school adjustment counselor and school psychologist available for any student or staff who may need them. We hope that you will have a discussion with your child between now and Monday, and then after school Monday so that this important conversation continues.
Chris Herren Intro
Chris Herren was a high school basketball legend from Fall River, Massachusetts who scored over 2,000 career points and was named to the 1994 McDonald's All American team. Herren realized his lifelong dream of playing in the NBA only to lose it all to the nightmare of drug addiction first alcohol, then cocaine and oxycontin, finally heroin. Alcohol and drug free since August 1, 2008, he has refocused his life to put his sobriety and family above all else. He shares his harrowing story of abuse and recovery in his memoir, Basketball Junkie, as well as in numerous interviews throughout the Emmy nominated ESPN Films documentary Unguarded, of which he is the subject.
Off the court, Chris Herren continues to share his story with audiences in the hopes of reaching just one person and making a difference in his or her life. To support this vision, he founded The Herren Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing treatment navigation, educational and mentoring programs to those touched byaddiction and to educate people of all ages on the dangers of substance abuse one person, one family at a time.
