TOBY'S TECH TIP: ADDING FILTERS IN PHOTOS
This month's Tech Tip comes School #1301. Vanguard Teacher Nancy Tatum emailed me the following; My 4th grade teachers, Mrs. Worsley and Mrs. Larsen are using Airplay as a way to check for understanding with their students. Not only can they see the student’s progress on the screen, but the can also to see if their students are on task.
This tip or “ trick” is done by pressing Airplay. Up to 12 iPads at a time will display on the board with their name shown at the top. The teachers can see if a student gets stuck - “ it’s like watching a movie of their students working”.
Innovative Teaching and Learning:
During math class, the students were using the SHOW ME app. The screen displayed exactly how they were solving the problems and the teachers could quickly see who needed help or who could solve the problem without help - that’s formative assessment at it’s best! The bonus for the teachers is that the kids think it is really cool to display their iPads with their work on the screen!
Challenge: How else can you use Airplay in your classroom?
Tobytech's Monthly Website Recommendation
http://educational-blogging.wikispaces.com/
Blogging is Learning!
Blogging provides many educational opportunities!
- Students have an authentic audience for their writing and that has an impact on the quality of their posts and comments.
- Students revisit and reflect upon the lessons when they read the posts on the blog. The learning doesn't stop when the chapter or unit ends, commenting keeps the learning alive.
- Students learn how to navigate around the Internet and how to present digital information in a variety of ways.
- Students and parents have opportunities to participate and contribute to an online community. Teaching this skill to students in elementary school helps prepare students for more individualize online collaboration in the middle and high school years.
- Students practice a letter-writing form, when they comment. Letter-writing form is a third grade standard.
- Students learn about geography by tracking our visitors and sharing comments with our blogging friends. Skyping and having Google HangOuts with blogging buddies brings geography to life!

Tobytech's Three-Free App Recommendations
TELL ABOUT
The app is designed for kids to effortlessly browse and respond to interesting visual and auditory prompts. It also provides families and educators a platform to create a custom experience for storytelling, generating ideas and thinking out loud.
WRITE ABOUT THIS
Write About This is a visual writing prompt & creation platform perfect for classrooms and families! With endless ways to respond and the ability to craft custom photo prompts, it will kick-start any writing activity. 125 categorized images & 375 text+voice prompts included!
EASY ANNOTATE
Easy Annotate is an app for the iPad designed to do just what it says — allow the user to easily annotate PDFs. But what makes this app stand out from other PDF annotating apps is the ability to have two PDFs opened at the same time. By turning the iPad to landscape view, one PDF is viewed on the left and one on the right, and both can be annotated.
The first time you open Easy Annotate an interactive user guide is displayed. The old mantra, ‘Learn by Doing’, comes into play. You do need to give it your time and attention. The guide comes in at 19 pages of very useful and important techniques to get you acquainted with the app.
NEXT STEPS FOR VANGUARDS: WHAT GOOD LOOKS LIKE
- Continue to work on your Apple Teacher plan with your Principal.
- Pick one ONE BEST THING book to read this month based on your goals and objectives. Download the book in iBooks. We will share your inspirations next month.
- Meet with your instructional team at least once a month at a designated time and place to summarize and share this SMORE and professional development and how you differentiate this information to your teachers. The instructional team consists of you, your Principal, Lead Literacy Teacher, Lead Tech Teacher and Assistant Principal.
- Use Toby as your "go to" Education Manager for Technology. If I don't know the answer, I will direct you appropriately. Use FaceTime as much as you can. My cell is 215-680-0123. I am also here to coach you and help you plan your professional development sessions.
OUR NEXT SESSION WILL RESUME ON 1/5/17.
