Try These Activities to Support Your Child's Reading this Summer
Six books to summer success
Read something every day
Encourage your child to take advantage of every opportunity to read. Find them throughout the day:
Morning: The newspaper/online - it can be the comics or today's weather.
Daytime: Calendar, TV guides, magazines, online resources, etc. For example, if your child likes the food channel, help him/her look for a recipe on the network's web site - then cook it together for more practice. Have your child write the grocery list and/or read the list while shopping. Make a game of reading road signs while traveling.
Evening: End the day by having your child read to you from the book he is currently reading. They can even reread a chapter while focusing on sounding like the character in the book. Rereading will help your child practice their fluency using the appropriate speed and expression.
Keep reading aloud
Reading aloud benefits all children and teens, especially those who struggle. One benefit is that you can read books your child can't, so they will build listening comprehension skills and vocabulary with grade-level and above books. This will increase his/her knowledge and expand his/her experience with text.
