Welcome Back

DISD Multilingual Broncos - August 2018

Thank you "Lee Conmigo" Volunteers

During the month of June bilingual teachers from Dayton ISD volunteered their time to read a bilingual story at the Jones Public Library each Wednesday. Lee conmigo, was inspired by the need of encouraging and empowering children to read over the summer. Children and their parents enjoyed bilingual stories, worked on a variety of craft activities, and had access to books over the summer. Many thanks to all the teachers that participated and to the Jones Public Library for a successful partnership with the Dayton ISD Bilingual/ESL Department.

2018-2019 DISD Bilingual Symposium "Second Language Acquisition Strategies"

Bilingual teachers from the district started the new school year by learning and collaborating during the 2018-2019 Bilingual Symposium. Throughout the day they worked together planning lessons using the strategy Preview-View-Review, and reading and learning about creating a Language-Rich Interactive Classroom using the 7 steps from the book "Toma la palabra" by Mónica Lara. Below you can find a brief overview of these strategies. If you are interested in using these strategies in your classroom, please contact us, Multilingual Broncos, we will be very happy to support you!

New Teacher Introduction to Bilingual and ESL Education

During the first week of August new teachers to DISD participated in the New Teacher Introduction to Bilingual and ESL Education. During these 3 hours teachers worked collaboratively to learn the complexities and nuances of teaching English Learners as well as the "A to Z" of acronyms of Bilingual and ESL Education. Teachers read and discussed about the importance of developing oracy in all content areas, as it is the foundation of literacy. In addition, teachers learned how to plan purposeful classroom conversations by framing their lessons keeping language in mind. Thank you new teachers for a session full of authentic learning and Welcome to DISD.

Reading Aloud to English Learners - I

Reading aloud to English Learners of all ages is one of the most powerful tools to teach them content and academic vocabulary, to build a community of readers, and to foster relationships with your students. The Department of Bilingual and ESL Education firmly believes in reaping the benefits of read-aloud and as many of you have noticed we have started our beginning of the year PD sessions reading aloud a picture book. We encourage you to welcome your students reading aloud a picture book. Below you will find the picture books we have read during our professional development sessions.
