Attendance - is important!
Our District goal each school year is to ensure that every student attends school each day and comes to school on-time. We understand, especially during this time of the school year, that some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other special circumstances. However, we also know that when a student misses too much school or comes into school late (tardy) too often, regardless of the reason- i.e.: doctor appointments, this can cause them to fall behind academically. The evidence is clear that children are less likely to succeed if they are chronically absent or tardy—which means missing 18 or more days over the course of an entire school year.
Research shows:
- Children chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade.
- By 6th grade, chronic absence is a proven early warning sign for students at-risk for dropping out of school.
- By 9th grade good attendance can predict graduation rates even better than 8th grade test scores.
Absences and tardies can add up quickly. A child is chronically absent if he or she misses just two days every month!! We will be sending home attendance warning letters over the next few weeks. Please be aware that we are bound by policy and law to inform you and our Truant Officer of chronic cases of missed school.
