Parent Return to School Intentions Survey
In October 2020, the Sonoma Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees approved a plan for returning to school when it is safe to do so. While it is unclear when we will be able to bring students and staff back to school safely, it is important for us to continuing planning for reopening our schools. In order to make these plans, we need to know each family's instructional preferences for its children.
This survey is very important to the districts future planning as we seek to create the best environment for learning in these difficult times. We would great appreciate it if you would complete the survey to help us better know the needs and intentions of our students.

Second Step
AHMS Families,
We want your child to be successful in school and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. While excelling in academic classes is important, students also need skills to take on learning challenges, make good decisions, handle strong emotions, and get along with others.
This year in advisory, we began the Second Step® Middle School, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve students’ social-emotional skills, such as emotion management, impulse control, problem solving, and empathy. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help students both in and out of school. These include:
Mindsets and Goals: Students learn how to develop a growth mindset and apply research based goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives. Recognizing
Bullying and Harassment: Students learn how to recognize bullying and harassment, stand up safely to bullying, and respond appropriately to harassment.
Thoughts, Emotions, and Decisions: Students learn how to recognize strong emotions and unhelpful thoughts, and apply strategies to manage their emotions and reduce stress.
Managing Relationships and Social Conflict: Students learn strategies for developing and maintaining healthy relationships, perspective-taking, and dealing with conflict.
So far, our students have completed the unit on Mindsets and Goals and are currently working on the Bullying and Harassment unit. To better involve families in these lessons, each week we will include a brief description of what your child learned about and a question that you can discuss as a family in our weekly newsletter.
This week’s lesson was called “Recognizing Bullying”. It will help your child understand the difference between bullying and joking around, and that joking can escalate and become bullying. Helping students understand when joking becomes bullying can reduce negative impacts on others.
Family Discussion Question- Tell your child about a time you witnessed or experienced bullying. Describe how this made you feel and ask your child what they might have felt.
If you have any questions about the Second Step Program or want to learn more feel free to contact our counselor, Kim Bellach, at kbellach@sonomaschools.org for more information.AHMS 8th Grade hoodies on sale (Hurry, you only have until next Friday)
