PRENDIVILLE CATHOLIC COLLEGE
11 April 2018
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
TOGETHER WE ARE PRENDIVILLE
It is fitting to end our term with PRENDIVILLE DAY.
Prendiville Day has many aspects to it and this year there is even more. It is a day to support the Archbishop’s Lifelink appeal whilst at the same time celebrating all that is Prendiville. The day is always a festive one and made so by the amazing contribution and participation of our student body. This year we will have a number of special events that will add to the day:
1. We will have a special Prendiville Day Liturgy
2. Our Liturgy will also incorporate our annual ANZAC day ceremony as ANZAC day will be in the school holidays.
3. Mrs Cissy Petkovich will also present a special medallion to our College which was gifted to her from the Prendiville family and was a sacred medal of Redmond Prendiville.
4. We will also reveal the new House Mascots as part of our growing commitment to promoting the uniqueness of each House.
HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL
Last Friday was a sea of colour as approximately 500 students represented their Houses and participated in the Annual House Cross Country Carnival. It was a brilliant event with so many students voluntarily participating and representing their House with spirit and determination. The swell of House pride was palpable and it was fantastic to see the House Leaders in action working together. Thank you to the Health and Phys Ed team for all their background coordination and organisation.
Joining the students were a large number of our staff and we are always inspired by Mr Rand McCoy who has run every cross country in his long teaching career. Thank you to our PE staff and House Event Coordinators for their leadership of the carnival. Mr McCoy certainly displays the spirit of Prendiville and is a great role model for our students.
Inclusive Sports Swimming Carnival
PCC WIN MAJOR SHIELD AWARD
On Friday, the students as part of Education Support participated in the Inclusive Sports Swimming Carnival at Claremont Pool. I am proud to announce that Prendiville Catholic College were the proud recipients of the Sue Bigelow shield at the recent Inclusive Sports Swimming Carnival.
Below is a description of what the shield represents:
Sue Bigelow was a dedicated educator who stood as an example of commitment to excellence having demonstrated leadership and achievement within the Inclusive Sport Sector. She played a significant part in promoting the participation of students with disabilities in sport. The receivers of the shield have displayed outstanding commitment and support for the involvement of their students in the ACC Inclusive Sports carnival.
Congratulations and well done to all students, staff and parents involved on the day.
BUS BAY ON PRENDIVILLE AVENUE – CHANGES
The College has undertaken a risk assessment of the College car parking areas and traffic flow areas. As a result of the assessment, the College is required to put strategies in place to minimise risk. Over the next term continual observation of traffic flow and parking areas will continue and changes will be made where risk is recognised.
The first stage of change will be changes to the use of the bus bay area which has been identified as a high risk area. The interchange of cars, buses and students presents a high risk situation particularly at after school pick up time.
From the start of Term 2 the following restrictions will apply to the area:
· No parking will be allowed at any time on the grassed island area of the bus bay. This area will be cordoned off to deny access to parking.
· Students may be dropped off before school in the bus bay area.
· There will be no student pick up by car in the afternoons until after 4.00pm. Only buses will be provided with access to the bus bay area.
Whilst it is appreciated these changes may cause some disruption, we have no choice in making these changes to minimise identified risk.
Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation with this matter.
HOUSE IDENTITY
Our mascots are nearly here and will arrive at Prendiville Catholic College on Friday for Prendiville Day. Our mascots have been inspired by student leader workshops and reflect the values and mission of each House Patron.
To everyone – I commend you for all the effort and enthusiasm you have individually brought to this first term of 2018 – it has been action packed and, at times, challenging but as our cartoon above reflects – together we do achieve great things and without doubt TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER.
See you all back at school on Tuesday 1st May. Remember that we revert to winter uniform first day back.

Dresses that require alteration must be ready for the first day of term to sit neatly at the top of the knee.
SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPH DAY
Annual school photographs will be taken on Thursday 3rd May by Academy Photography. All students must be immaculately attired in full College winter uniform, including blazer. The following grooming standards must be adhered to:

Instructions to parents regarding the cost and procedure for purchasing photographs are on the envelope and payment must be included when the envelope is given to the photographer.
Spare photo envelopes will be available from Student Administration for new students and anyone who needs a replacement. Envelopes for family photographs are also available from Student Administration.
Family photographs will be taken during recess and lunchtime on Photo Day. It is the responsibility of family groups to report to the photographer at the beginning of recess or lunch to have a photo taken.

INTERHOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
The Interhouse Athletics Carnival is on the horizon – 10th May (Year 7-9) and 11th of May (Year 10-12). The carnival is a compulsory event for students to attend and it is a great day for students to participate, have fun and perform to their best of their abilities.
The carnival is run in a tabloid format. Students will be in their Houses and Year groups and will move from one event to the next as a group throughout the day with rest periods at various times during the day. Students will compete within that group at all events and have the option of competing in as many events as possible. Students' results will be put in collectively during the day and students will be ranked across the Year group. The more events the students are involved in, the more points they will obtain individually and for their Houses. The results are also used to help us select our Athletics Team for ACC Carnival in Term 3.
Information regarding the pre-carnival events have been sent out along with food orders for the carnival day for students who will need recess or lunch on the day. Food orders need to be submitted to the Finance office by the 4th May (Term 2, Week 1). The final information for the carnival will be sent out early in Term 2, Week 1.
Lastly, as part of the Athletics Programme, in Term 3 the PE Department along with two specialist coaches from Athletics WA (Lynn Foreman and Kylie Wheeler) will be running training sessions to better prepare our team for the ACC Carnival. Students will be invited to come regardless of ability and it will be great opportunity to learn or improve their skills. A direqt message will be sent out regarding athletics training late in Term 2.

CAS teams play after school on Tuesdays (Seniors), Wednesdays (Juniors) and Thursdays (Junior AFL). This is a great opportunity for students to participate in a competitive and fun competition. Good luck to all students who trialled this week and for the rest of the CAS season.
2018 Inter-house Cross Country
On Friday 6th April, Prendiville College held the Inter-house Cross Country carnival. It was very impressive to see 485 students run, jog or walk the 4km course. This was a great opportunity for students to show their physical talents, participate with friends and represent their Houses. A special mention to Benjamin Hillen who placed first out of all students and Jon Barry who placed first amongst the competitive teachers. It was great to see multiple parents and teachers supporting the event and the community coming together for a sausage sizzle at the end. The final Cross Country points tally is as follows:

EASTER RAFFLE THANK YOU
Thanks to the generous donations and the large participation, the 2018 Easter Raffle was a huge success and we have raised a gross amount of $1306 which will go towards the benefit of all students.
The P&F would like to express our thanks to the parents and PCC community for all Easter egg donations and for purchasing the raffle tickets. There were 116 prizes handed out this year.
A very special thank you to the students and staff of the Education Support Centre who worked so hard assisting the P and F. The students collated all the envelopes and raffle tickets, they assisted with the making up and wrapping of all the prizes and did the raffle draw for all the winners.
It has been a wonderful experience working with Ciara O'Gorman, Sarah George and the team at the ESC. Thank you for all your hard work and being so wonderful.
A big thank you to the parents, staff and committee members that helped with the wrapping of the prizes and all the other preparations to make this event such a success.

LIFELINK 2018
The launch of LifeLink for 2018 took place on Tuesday 20 March at Aranmore Catholic College. There were 25 secondary Catholic schools present and a total of 230 guests in attendance including students, teachers, principals and special guests.
Established by the Archdiocese of Perth in 1994, LifeLink works to provide ongoing financial and promotional support of agencies established or assisted by the Church. LifeLink’s agencies deliver professional services and caring support to thousands of people in need throughout WA each year.
The morning began with addresses from the Most Rev Timothy Costelloe SDB, Archbishop of Perth, the Most Rev Donald G Sproxton, Auxiliary Bishop of Perth, and Ms Diana Alteri, Team Leader, Religious Education and Faith Formation Team, who represented Catholic Education Western Australia’s Acting Executive Director Dr Debra Sayce. Following morning tea, the panel engaged with students through a question and answer session allowing them to get valued feedback and share ideas about maximising LifeLink within the community.
The money raised in our Prendiville Day stalls will be donated to the appeal for Lifelink 2018.

CRAZY SOCK DAY
On Friday March 23rd the Prendiville Catholic College community participated in Crazy Sock Day. Initiated by Brigid House, students were encouraged to wear the craziest socks they could find. We had an outstanding variety of long socks, striped socks, fluro socks, odd socks, socks with bells, socks with whistles...you name it and someone was wearing them!
This year the theme for Project Compassion was 'For a Just Future'. Throughout Project Compassion students and teachers were encouraged to donate a small contribution to the money box that was placed in every PCG throughout the school. On Crazy Sock Day everyone was encouraged to make an additional gold coin donation which became a huge contribution to Project Compassion because as a whole school community we raised an extra $876.05.
As a reward for having the craziest socks, winners from every PCG received a chocolate and the winning student from each House was given a $25 gift voucher to spend at Lakeside Joondalup Shopping Centre. Representatives from the Brigid House Council also went and voted for the top 3 craziest socks worn by the staff.
Thank you to everyone who participated and donated to this worthwhile cause.

CHISHOLM DAY OF INCLUSION
Wednesday 21st March was the Chisholm House Day of Inclusion. This is a day where Chisholm House united and celebrated the qualities of Caroline Chisholm with a special focus on inclusivity.
The Chisholm House students and staff certainly lived up to the House theme of ‘Stronger Together’ and started the day with a Mass which was attended by an impressive amount of students. This was then followed up by a sweet treat for all Chisholm House members in the form of a Krispy Kreme donut in the sunken garden during PCG time. Left over donuts were sold at recess to raise funds for Project Compassion.
Ms Charles, Chisholm Events Coordinator, also took the opportunity to work with the Chisholm House Council on a secret project to ‘get the school smiling’. School bells were replaced throughout the day with popular songs which make people happy. It was fantastic to see students across the College dancing at the end of class or excitedly guessing at what the next song would be.
Chisholm’s Day of Inclusion was a great success, which teamed with the ‘Smile Activity’, really embraced the theme of Inclusivity, with everyone at Prendiville Catholic College grinning from ear to ear.

YEAR 8 MEDIEVAL NIGHT
BANG! CLASH! THUD! As we watched the knights fight, the crowd cheering them on, to find out who would be crowned victor, that’s just where the fun began. On Tuesday 27th March, the Year 8 students took part in a Medieval Night. The excitement of the night began way before the event, building castles to be displayed on the night as well as choosing a costume to wear. We had princesses, knights, peasants, Lords, Monks and don’t forget the Kings. It all began as soon as we arrived. We started off playing many games including tug of war, diablos, archery, chess and much more. We were then summoned to watch the knights from the West Australian Berserkers fight to the death (till one was on the ground). We were very lucky to witness this as they will be representing Australia in Rome at this year's Battle of the Nations. We were then treated to a medieval feast, which for many was a real highlight of the night. We were served roast pork, beef stew, potatoes, bubble and squeak and don’t forget the sticky date pudding. The best castles and the best costumes were then rewarded with prizes. Overall the night was a great success and we would definitely recommend it to future Year 8 students.

CREATIVE ARTS
Car Spray Incursion
Last month the Year 11 Certificate III Visual Arts class participated in our annual Rally Car spray paint incursion. Local street artist Trevor Bly again facilitated the day giving students an insight into the practical skills required to complete an artwork on a car. Kelvin Woods (father of Alyssa, Year 11) has signed up for his seventh Cancer Council Rally, and this year he will be driving from Brisbane to Darwin in a 1974 Triumph 2500TC raising money for the charity. The Creative Arts Department would like to thank him for this excellent opportunity and we wish him luck for the rally this month. If anyone would like to contribute to his efforts, please follow the link below.

Art
It's has been a hive of activity across all year levels in Term 1.
The energetic Year 7 classes have been designing clay boats and continue to learn hand building clay techniques. Year 8 classes have been competing detailed pencil drawings outside the classroom for an illustrated Concertina book. The Year 9 Project Art classes have worked on painting skills for a portrait and we have seen some phenomenal studies of faces throughout the early stages of the project.
Year 9 students created mixed-media pieces inspired by Western Australian artist, Gregory Pryor in Studio Art. Their work, influenced by the devastating bushfires that struck Esperance in 2015, has been displayed in the PAC foyer for the past month. The work was shown to Gregory Pryor who commented on how beautiful they were with a real sensitivity for the theme for the Australian bush and regeneration.
The Year 10 students have been very industrious and their ukulele inspired artworks are nearing completion. We look forward to showcasing their work in the PAC next term.
All of the Art students should be very proud of their achievements this term.

SCIENCE AT PRENDIVILLE
Year 7 Science Astronomy Night
On Monday 26 March a group of enthusiastic young Science club members attended the annual Astronomy night. The students got to be part of an interactive presentation by Richard Tonello - an astronomer from the Gingin Observatory. Richard spoke of the night sky, our place in space and time and then spent 25 minutes in a question and answer session. The students really gained an incredible insight into Astronomy and enjoyed the opportunity to engage with a 'Real Life Scientist' Thanks you to all the Science staff and students who attended this engaging and exciting evening.

Year 9 Science Lake Joondalup Excursion 2018
This term, the Science Department took the Year 9 students to Neil Hawkins park to study the ecology of Lake Joondalup. Students participated in taking measurements of the waterway, birdwatching, looking at macroinvertebrates from the lake, and listening to ecologist, Mandy Bamford.
Our Science topic for Year 9 is Ecology which is the study of ecosystems. To get us started with this topic, we went on a field trip excursion to the Neil Hawkins Park, Lake Joondalup. We were able to do fun activities and look at the wildlife in its natural habitat. Some of the activities included walking around to the signs to see the history of Joondalup, the animals that were in the area, the natural environment and plants. We were also able to have a talk with experts that showed us some of the life that was around the park and lake. They taught us about the environment and how it changes and affects the animals. They also brought with them a lizard to show us and interesting facts about these creatures and animals everywhere. Before going to Lake Joondalup, I thought it would be like any other topic we learn in Science but once we went on this excursion it made me more intrigued and interested into this introduced topic. This excursion made learning about the ecosystem fun and enjoyable for everyone. I learnt so many new things from this experience and getting to do it with my friends made it even better.

The students were wonderfully well behaved and interested, as always.

Year 11 ATAR Earth and Environmental Science Peppermint Grove and Cottesloe 2018
Earlier in Term 1, the Year 11 EES students had their first taste of environmental fieldwork. They visited Peppermint Grove and Cottesloe Beach to learn about sedimentary rocks and their formations. These rocks and formations give us clues to our geological history. We had a wonderful tour guide from Earth Science WA show us around the key spots in these two locations. Students were invited to 'kiss the rocks' in order to get up close and personal when looking at the grains and minerals. They were even lucky enough to view Sculptures By The Sea.
The students gained important knowledge on key EES syllabus points that is difficult to demonstrate in a classroom setting. They were exceptional in their conduct and represented the College wonderfully.

PRENDIVILLE GALLERY OPEN DAY
The Prendiville Gallery and TIDE Studios were opened to the public last Sunday for a day of family fun. People of all ages worked alongside each other creating fused glass jewellery and crosses. Light refreshments were enjoyed as people took the opportunity to browse the Prendiville Gallery and purchase custom made items.
It was a fantastic opportunity for FlexEd and 3D Design students to demonstrate their glassworking skills as they helped visitors and they enjoyed showcasing their own work and that of TIDE Staff who also had artworks on display.
We would like to thank everyone that came along and participated in our wonderful programme. Because of the huge involvement from the public, we all had a blast and it was such a success that we are aiming to do this again. Our appreciation lengthens to include our fellow students who voluntarily came down to help and guide our visitors when making their amazing creations.
Hopefully the day inspired future students to have a go in this delightful course. It was a tremendous day of observing and creating fantastic artworks that would not have been possible without our incredible teachers whom we would like to thank for putting this whole day together.
