South Oaks School

February 2018

Principal's Message

It is extremely important to belong somewhere. In fact, experts say that until we belong, we cannot learn very well. So, at South Oaks we work hard at building strong relationships with our students, so they know they are loved and cared for by those who are teaching them.

In Deeper Learning, we talk about "Learning Partnerships". In school, the most important partnership is the one between the teacher and the student, since they are on a learning journey together. Especially when things become challenging, students will need that connection to stay focused and learn. Sometimes, it takes time to build that connection, and it may be tough, but we will always work to that end. We hope your child feels like they belong at South Oaks. If they don't, please let us know. There are many ways that we can help to improve that connection for your child.

February is "I Love to Read" month. One of the greatest benefits of reading with a child is that it builds a connection with them. We encourage you to read with your child as a daily routine, not just to build Literacy skills, but also to build that sense of belonging and safety.

Have a great month!

New Traffic System

Thanks for all your flexibility during our traffic changes. At this point, things are beginning to flow quite well. I appreciate the feedback from parents as we go. Just a couple of things to note;

1. When you drop off your child in the morning between 8:30 and 8:50 am, you should do so by the huts and your child can go to the playground, where we have teacher supervision. If you arrive at 8:50 am or later, there is no supervision on the playground, so please drop your child off at the front doors.

2. Please watch very carefully for children when you enter the parking lot at the driveway on Oak street. We are providing extra supervision in this area to ensure safety.

3. For the pick-ups after school, we really do not want kids walking out into the parking lot alone. This is not safe. So, please come to the front doors to meet your child each day. Thanks for your help to keep all kids safe.

I Love to Read Month

February is Literacy Month! Our theme this year is the "South Oaks Literacy Olympics". Classes will be going for Gold as they participate in literacy activities in the following events - reading, writing, listening, speaking, representing and viewing. Champion Wednesdays include "Read in a toque", "Read with a Torch" (flashlight), "Read in Athletic Wear" and "Read with a Mascot" (stuffy). Be sure to check the South Oaks School online calendar for upcoming events. Everyone is welcome to attend our Opening and Closing Ceremonies at 9:30 am on Feb. 1 and March 2. Students will be encouraged to wear their team colours for the closing assembly. The month will wrap up with a "Champions' Book Event" where each student will be awarded a new book!

Book Fair Details

The book fair will be open from Feb. 20-22 in the library. Students will once again have a chance to browse the books with their class. They will make a "wish list" so you as parents can decide if you want to buy anything. We seem to have trouble if children bring money to school, so we encourage no money to be sent with your child. If you wish to purchase anything, parents can come to the library anytime between 8:45 - 11:30 or 12:00 - 5:00. If you wish to go with your child, please arrange to come during a recess break, so the classes are not interrupted. We are not planning for evening hours this year.

Kindergarten Pre-registration - February 5th to 9th

If you have a child who will be 5 years old by Dec. 31/18 and you live in the South Oaks School catchment area, please call the school at 204-434-6165 to register your child for the 2018-19 school year with our secretaries, Mrs. Froese or Mrs. Penner. This is our pre-registration, which enables us to notify parents in April of their child's actual school visit. If you know of someone who has a child eligible for Kindergarten, but who may not receive this newsletter, please encourage him or her to call the school.

New South Oaks T-shirt!

Starting on Feb. 5, students and parents will have a chance to order the brand new South Oaks t-shirt. The t-shirt comes with a brand new logo and is very kid-friendly. The cost of the shirt will be $15.00.

Order forms will be sent home on Feb. 5 and may be returned to the school with your child. You may also stop by the school and order t-shirts in the library Monday to Wednesday from 8:30 until 10:30. During these times, we will also have t-shirts available for sizing. We will also take orders during our book fair. All orders must be in by Feb. 22, with delivery as soon as possible after.

We look forward to having a new school t-shirt that can be worn to promote belonging and school pride for the students. We believe it is important for all kids to have a t-shirt, however, some may not be able to afford it. So, if you are willing to buy an additional shirt, for a child that cannot afford one, please indicate this on the order form and include payment.
