James Gafney: Proud Of His Military Career
James Gafney enlisted in the United States Army in 1988, not long after graduating from high school. After completing boot camp, he trained as a helicopter mechanic at the US Army Air Assault School in Fulda Germany. James Gafney worked on AH-1F and CH-47D helicopters. After rising in rank to become a Staff Sergeant, he was accepted into Officer Candidate School, which he graduated from in May of 1999 as a Distinguished Military Graduate.
James Gafney then held the rank of Second Lieutenant. Following Officer Candidate School he attended Initial Entry Rotary Wing Training at Ft. Rucker, Alabama, and graduated with honors. That placed him back in the CH-47 community, but now he was a pilot and platoon leader. In 2003, James Gafney was the Company Executive Officer with the 101st Airborne Division during the initial invasion of Iraq at the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Following his first Iraq tour, James Gafney decided to attend the Armor Captains Career Course at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. He spent two years there, and commanded a small company that was responsible for training, teaching, and mentoring National Guard Aviation units deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan. This earned James Gafney the Meritorious Service Medal and the Bronze Order of St. Michael Medal. By then he had attained the rank of Major, and became the Executive Officer of a Military Transition Team (MiTT). At the end of his tour, Major James Gafney received the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious, for his service mentoring Corps Level Colonels and Generals of the Iraqi Army.
Today, James Gafney is out of the army and working in small businesses in Clarksville, Tennessee, including work as a Realtor with the Clarksville Elite Team. He is proud of his military service, but modest about it, too.
