Superintendent's Report
May 18, 2020
Coronavirus Communications
Last week sent a letter to our community about planning for the new school year. We all look forward to welcoming our students back to school in September, and planning for the District to reopen continues to be an ongoing process.
As indicated in our letter, our planning is collaborative. We have enlisted the assistance of local health officials and the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety. CDC guidelines and recommendations guide our decision-making. Further, our groups of local superintendents have also written to Dr. Rachel Levine to provide clear, concrete guidance to our districts. The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our priority.
We will continue to share planning updates with the community bi-weekly. Our next planning update will be sent next week. You can click here to review the first planning communication we sent last week.
Finally, we have created a singular document that warehouses all of our District communications about COVID-19. Our goal of warehousing all of our communications in one place is to provide ease of access for our community. Click here to access the document. Consider bookmarking it for future reference!
We hope that everyone continues to remain safe and well! While we are starting to see a reduction in COVID-19 cases, it is important that we continue to follow health and safety guidance to ensure that we continue to fight the virus!

Administrative Changes
- We are pleased to introduce Ms. Rita Perez as our finalist candidate for the Director of Student Services position. Rita has had a distinguished career as a teacher, building level administrator, central-office administrator, and PDE official. Rita comes to us from the Coatesville Area School District where she serves as the Director of Student Services. Her work in special education and related services, as well as her proven track record in ensuring the implementation of equitable practices and culturally responsive education, will serve our students and staff well. Rita was chosen from an incredibly strong pool of candidates, and we look forward to her leadership of the Student Services Department!
- Ms. Meredith Penner, who currently serves as our Supervisor of Elementary Education, will take on an expanded role, focusing on K-12 Teaching and Learning. As a District in transition toward true standards-based instruction and presumed competence for ALL students, Meredith's influence will benefit our entire District.
- Ms. Kim Schuler, who currently serves as our Supervisor of Secondary Education will take on the role of Supervisor of Safety and Student Wellness. In this role, Ms. Schuler will oversee the District's safety programs and processes and work to increase and enhance our wellness efforts. She will continue to be instrumental in leading the Safe2Say initiative as well as a number of student-support processes.
- The positions currently held by Dr. Kim Minor, Ms. Meredith Penner, and Ms. Kim Schuler will be abolished with the appropriate Board votes this evening.
As a result of personnel changes for the 2020-2021 school year, UDSD will have the equivalent of two fewer administrative positions as we move into the next school year. We are confident that our Leadership Team will continue to support all members of our UDSD One Team well.
