What will students learn this year?
Project Based Learning
- In conjunction with imagination.org, Caine's Arcade and the 2022 Day of Play, students will participate in our annual Global Cardboard Challenge! The Global Cardboard Challenge is a celebration of students' creativity and the role communities can play in fostering it (www.imagination.org). Students are encouraged to create something that can help others solve a problem, or otherwise create a positive impact. Families are invited onto campus to join in our Day of Play, this October!
Lion's Cage
- Lion's Cage is our take on the popular TV show, Shark Tank! 5th Grade students are challenged to identify a problem that they or their peers may face in their everyday life and create a product that will solve that problem. Students create a working prototype using household objects and demonstrate its use in a marketing video. Students create a business plan, and pitch it to a group of investors, or "Lions", hoping to earn investment in their company.
The Great Debate
- Debate Topics are topics aimed at helping students gain both soft and hards skills in leadership while debating a topic. The topics are instrumental in helping young adults to gain confidence in expressing their own ideas. The topics circle around our daily lives. Previous topics include: Should we have homework? Should children be paid for chores? Embedded in a unit on persuasive writing, students prepare their side of the debate and present it in our annual 5th Grade Debate.

Lion Ambassadors/ Leadership Roles 🦁
Our 5th Grade students play an important role in our building each day. From welcoming our student body to school each First Friday to recognizing our teachers on their birthdays, they take on a very important leadership role. See below to learn more about these opportunities for our students.
PRIDE Time
- 5th Grade students each take on the role of PRIDE Time Leader throughout the year. Along with a classmate, they lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance, introduce the days' events and share about upcoming events, call on students in other grade levels to share and lead us in our school pledge.
Recess Crew
- As part of our Recess Crew, 5th grade students take on the responsibility of checking our playground for hazards and reporting them to our staff (along with an adult), bringing out and returning equipment and ensuring that the playground is cleaned up at the end of each recess. They also support younger students in appropriate games and play.
First Friday
- Music & dancing, posters, treats and more! What better way to welcome our community to school! Each First Friday, a group of our energetic and enthusiastic 5th grade students will be out at morning drop off to welcome our CBA community to school. Be sure to honk and wave as you arrive!
Events Committee
- Our students love lending a hand at our school events and this year, the 5th Grade students will be part of our official "Events Committee". Student responsibilities will vary from hosting the Talent Show, to helping set up chairs, to decorations and refreshments! Students will even help determine the themes and activities for our mother/son and father/daughter events.
Media Club
- As part of our 5th Grade Media Club, students will document and share the events and activities going on at CBA through newsletters and our social media! Students will take photos and videos, and use Canva to create a visually aesthetic social media post.
