Mrs. Newman's Class Newsletter
ELA
This week in Phonics we will focus on words with open syllables such as: be, he, shy, dry, go, so, try, sky, me, my, and ski. Our focus words for the week are: because, once, even, soon, don't together, large, watch, done, another, saw, eat, know, early, sound, and food. Students will have these words in their agenda on Monday and should practice reading them all week.
In Reader's Workshop this week we will discuss problem and solution in a story. We will also look closer at features of nonfiction texts such as table of contents and index. We will look at other text features such as bold words, captions, graphics, and diagrams. It should be tons of fun!
In Writer's Workshop, we will discuss pronouns and we will begin editing our writing using fluency phones. I'll do my best to post pictures of this on twitter. If you aren't following us yet, you can find our class, @newmangrade2, and catch a glimpse of our day.

Math
In Math this week, we continue with unit 2 and we will work more with grouping tens as hundreds. We will write 3 digit numbers that are represented by groups of tens. We will use various counters and manipulatives to get hands-on practice. I can't wait to see how the students do with this!
Social Studies
This week in Social Studies we will learn how to resolve conflict with peers. We will also learn the purpose of the U.S. Constitution as we celebrate Constitution Day on Thursday. On Friday, we will discuss safety tips for the playground, in the water, and when riding our bikes.
Donations Needed
Believe it or not, we are already running low on tissues. I bought a few boxes over the weekend that should help us make it through this week. If you see tissues on sale and would like to donate a box or two to our classroom, our little noses would really appreciate it.
Family Pictures
Please consider sending in a picture of your family for us to display on our "Family Pics" bulletin board. It looks a little bare right now, so we'd like to fill it up. I promise I will return them at the end of the year. It's always fun for us to share our families with everyone in the class. :)
