ALA & Diversity
"We Need Diverse Books" and more...
An ALA smore report by Caitlin Jacobson, Ketchikan
ALA and its divisions have been working hard to address diversity both within the organization and within literature. Not only has the "We Need Diverse Books" movement increased awareness of needed changes in children's literature, WNDB has provided a variety of tools to help the cause.

Other ALA events
John Lewis has spoken several times at ALA conferences lately. I was able to hear him speak a few years back when his graphic novel biography, March: Book One, first came out. He was due to speak again about the 3rd volume, but also spoke at the Pulse Memorial program hosted by ALA leadership. Both are linked below.

ALSC & SLJ push diversity
ALSC has been working tirelessly on issues related to diversity. Last year, an ALSC hero, KT Horning, lectured on diversity in children's literature, and a related statement was added to all ALSC award manuals. A webinar on awards included a lecture from KT, and is linked below. Take a look!

Sarah Park's Wordpress blog. She is an assistant professor in MLIS at St. Catherine University, St. Paul, MN, and I couldn't stop reading her conference report! She attended many of the diversity-related programs, and it was special getting her take on them all.
