Perkins School News - April 2018
Monthly News for Parents
Perkins School Families,
It’s hard to believe that March is already here. Hopefully we are turning the corner and are on the way to spring and some warmer weather soon. I hope you were able to take some time to relax and refresh over the break in February and spend some quality time with family and friends.
Perkins School Playground: We are continuing to compete for a new playground in a contest with 4 other schools around the nation, so please refer to a link in this newsletter below to put in your daily vote to help us win that contest for our students.
School Safety: In a recent email to families from our Superintendent Matt Cook, safety and security was emphasized as a top priority, and I couldn’t agree more. We have heard all too often about violent incidents in school, and a very important part of Mr. Cook’s message that I would like to repeat, is that if you or your child sees something, to say something. As he said, you and the students can be the eyes and ears that can help us to know what is happening in the schools and in the community.
Sharing our Learning: Perkins School is hosting the Board of Education meeting and presenting together with Lincoln School in the Perkins cafeteria on March 14th at
7:00 p.m. Teachers and students will be sharing information about learning and instruction in our schools this year. The Perkins School library is also going to be open at 5:00p.m. before the board meeting to show our new Maker Space, so we hope you can join us that evening for these special events.
As always, thank you to all of our families for everything you do in supporting our students and teachers at Perkins School!
Best Regards,
Sue Achille ~ Principal

REMINDER FROM THE NURSE'S OFFICE...
REST IS BEST!
No matter what your child's age, establish a bedtime routine that encourages good sleep habits. Sleep is very important to children's well-being. Children can become hyper, disagreeable, and have extreme changes in behavior. They may have a hard time paying attention in school.
Preschoolers sleep about 11-12 hours per night. School-age children need 10-11 hours of sleep a night.
Bedtime Routine Tips
~Leave enough technology-free time before bed to allow your child to unwind.
~Include a winding-down period during the half hour before bedtime.
~Stick to a bedtime, alerting your child both half an hour and 10 minutes beforehand.
~Keep consistent playtimes and mealtimes.
~Avoid stimulants, such as caffeine, near bedtime.
~Make the bedroom quiet, cozy, and perfect for sleeping.
~Use the bed only for sleeping - not for playing or watching TV.
~Limit food and drink before bedtime.
~Allow your child to choose which pajamas to wear, which stuffed animal to take to bed, which book to read.
~Consider playing soft, soothing music.
~Tuck your child into bed snugly for a feeling of security.
A child who has a good night's rest is ready to tackle the next day!
Happy Spring!

Perkins Playground – Thank You for Your Support!
As you may know, we did not come in first place in the contest to win the $100,000 grant for a new playground for our school. We did however receive well over 14,000 votes from parents, staff members and community members, not only in our own community but also from surrounding areas. I am so grateful for the support that was shown throughout this campaign, to spread the word through the local news, social media, student signs and school websites both here and in other districts. Channel 10 WHEC, Channel 8 WROC and Spectrum News all ran wonderful stories to publicize and assist our efforts, as did the Finger Lakes Times.
Our students still need a second playground, as our current playground cannot serve our 25 classes. The size of this playground accommodates only one class at a time. Therefore, we will continue to make plans to renovate the playground on the southeast side of our school to provide a safe and fun outdoor play space for our students.
Once again, thank you to everyone for your support. Every vote you cast showed how much you care about our kids.

Perkins School Community Service Activity
Throughout the month of April Perkins School will be participating in a community service activity to support the Golisano Children’s Hospital
How can you can help? Just send in your loose change. We have collection containers in each classroom, in the main office and at our greeter’s desk.
We’ll be collecting coins all month to donate to the hospital, so please dig into your pockets, check under your couch cushions and under the seats of your car and drop off those coins at school.
Thank you for your support!
