SCOPES MONKEY TRIALS
Monkey Trials
In 1925, Darrow defended john t. scopes in the STATE OF TENNESSEE V SCOPES trial. It has often been called the "Scopes Monkey Trial," a title popularized by author and journalist h.l. mecken. The trial pitted Darrow against William Jennings Bryan in an American court case that tested the butler act, which had been passed on March 21, 1925.They asked if he would be willing to be indicted for teaching evolution. Though he couldn't remember actually teaching Darwin's theory, Scopes believed in evolution and agreed to the plan. The trial quickly became a media circus.
