Dear Center Community,

It was another fun and enriching week at Center. We are all thankful for 100 days of learning together this year. Check out all of the fun ways students and staff celebrated below.

Thank you for supporting Center enrichment. Our second grade students had an opportunity to engage in hands on learning about rocks and minerals this week. Please see the picture above.

Tomorrow is sure to be a fun day, with lots of Valentines Day celebrations. A reminder that no food or candy can be shared with students.

Did you know that tomorrow is the date that Frederick Douglass celebrated his birthday? Please take some time to share some of his incredible accomplishments with your student(s).

Staff updates:

We are thrilled to welcome back Judith Richerd Gladius as a paraprofessional on Monday. I know our students and staff will be thrilled to have her rejoin us.

We hope you are able to make it to our virtual BINGO night on Thursday. Be well and have a good week.

Warm regards,

Dianna and Donna

Ms. Engdahl is Currently Reading

In grade 2 library this month, we are reading “Wilma Unlimited: How Wilma Rudolf Became the World’s Fastest Woman” written by Kathleen Krull and illustrated by David Diaz.” Olympic athletes need dedication and perseverance to succeed and in this biography of Wilma Rudolf, she certainly showed both. Wilma was one of 22 children and was stricken with polio when she was five years old; some wondered if she would ever walk again. As a Black child growing up in the south during the 1940s, most doctors would not treat Black people. Wilma and her mother travelled twice a week over 50 miles by bus to the nearest hospital that would care for people of color. Wilma worked hard, never giving up hope. She went on to become the first American woman to win three Olympic gold medals. To learn about her amazing journey, read this book about Wilma Rudolf!

Notes from the Nurse

The State of Massachusetts requires students to be regularly screened for vision, hearing and growth. Vision is screened for ability identify letters at a 20/32 distance and eye muscle coordination. Our audiometers screen for tones that are commonly found in parts of speech. Center School will start the screening process first for vision starting February 14th. Hearing screens will be completed as time permits. If you have a hearing concern about your child, contact the School Nurse and a hearing screen will done ASAP.

If you prefer your child, not be to be screened, please notify Kathy Rossman, School Nurse in writing or by email. rossmank@chelmsford.k12.ma.us
