Social Emotional Learning
Building Emotional Intelligence One Child at a Time
Yeager's Social Emotional Learning Program
At Yeager we educate the whole child and the Social Emotional Learning program is blended into our day to support both academics and our PBIS program. To properly engage in an SEL program, it must become a part of the school culture. To that end, we focus on a variety of components to SEL implementation, which are:
SEL Morning Meetings: Each morning, just after announcements, teachers lead their class in a group discussion about emotions. Students investigate the causes and reactions to feelings, as well as understanding and labeling them. We focus on diversity, inclusion, and empathy, learning that everyone belongs and everyone should have a voice.
Mood Meter: The Mood Meter helps develop emotional awareness through recognition and communication of feelings. It is a color-coded chart used to graph feelings based on energy and pleasantness levels. It helps families and educators know how to best meet students' needs.
Mindful Moments (Stop, Breathe, Think, Choose): The Mindful Moment helps students handle strong emotions so that they can make better decisions. It is a brief "step-back" from the situation. The Meta-Moment teaches students to pause and think before acting and consider how their "best self" would react in the situation.
In order for SEL programs to thrive, educators and parents must also be working on growing their own emotional intelligence. As adults become more confident in their ability to recognize and regulate themselves, they are better equipped to provide atmospheres of calm and learning, while modeling their best selves when faced with strong emotions.
