Parent News Socktober 2019
Notes from Mike
It is now the 10th month of the year and at CT, that month is SOCKTOBER! Socktober has been the name of this month for the past 4 years as our school has partnered with Mission Southside to collect new socks and underwear to be distributed back into our community to those in need. To see where we originally got our inspiration, watch this Kid President video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFZGyUZ9YrM
Socktober at CT also means that each student and staff member will participate in our #CTServes day. For #CTServes, a group of teachers (Mrs. Dickerson, Mrs. Hoyer and Mrs. Wann) organize a half day when we send nearly 800 bodies out in the community putting their hands and hearts to work helping others. Now in our third year of #CTServes, I feel like we are making a difference for those we serve but also in our own outlook, which is awesome. Our #CTServes day is the morning of Socktober 16. That night or the next day, we look forward to hearing from you, how it went for your student when you visit for conferences. Make sure to ask them where they went, what they did, and how they felt about serving. More information about conferences can be found in this newsletter.
Thank you for your help producing a generation that sees the importance of helping others.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
At California Trail, we hold what would be called arena style conferences. All of our teachers have an assigned table in the Multi-Purpose Room (Cafeteria.) Conferences are walk up and not scheduled ahead of time. When you arrive, there will be a table set up in the main hallway where we will have your child’s grade card for you to pick up as a reminder of who to seek out for a conference. With this style of conferencing, the anticipation is that each conference will last a few minutes with each teacher so that you will be able to see all seven teachers and they will be able to touch base with all of their students’ parents. If you anticipate needing more time with a particular teacher, please request a time outside of these two dates to better meet those needs.

Library News
Destiny Discover and Axis 360
All students set up their accounts for Destiny Discover and Axis 360 during September.
Destiny Discover is the student side of the District’s automation system for material checkout. Students learned how to check their record for current material checkout to the, search our library holdings, and how to access and download eBooks from CT’s Collection.
Johnson County Public Libraries has partnered with Olathe Public Schools (and Blue Valley Schools) to allow our students access to their young adult eBook and audiobook holdings via their Destiny Discover Login credentials. Students installed the Axis 360 app and set up their account using their district credentials.
Students were very excited to have access to these materials!
CT Cross Country
CT Cross Country had a great 2019 season! We had about 100 student athletes out for cross country this year. They spent about 4 weeks training in the heat before we got into the "racing" portion of our schedule.
We started the race season with a 7th and 8th grade meet at ODAC. That race was a 3K- not our usual 1 or 2 mile race distance. We had 2 out of the top 5 for the girls and 3 out of the top 5 for boys in that meet.
The next week we hosted meets with Pioneer Trail and another with Chisolm Trail, Indian Trail, and Summit Trail. Those two meets went great with winners in almost every race.
We then headed to Oregon Trail for a meet with Summit Trail and Oregon Trail. That couldn't have gone better- we won every race and every team category as well!
We finished our season with the City Cross Country meet last Saturday morning. We had several top 10 finishers. In 4 of the 6 races we had athletes finish in first place! In the other two we were 2nd and 5th place.
Coach Peterson and Coach Bruse were super proud of the work these athletes put in this year!
