Pleasant Valley Post
October 2018
A Message from the Principal
It's hard to believe that October is here already! What an opening we've had! I could not be happier to work and learn along side the staff and students here at Pleasant Valley! Further, I value my partnership with the families of our school. We all want the same things - for all students be successful and for our school to be a safe and happy place! I truly believe that if we communicate and work together, these things (and so much more) are possible!
We have a lot of exciting things going on this month! Our third annual PTO Fun Run is on October 12th, we have an assembly, field trips, visitors presenting to students, some extended learning clubs starting up and more! The experiences we are working to provide for our students as we work to create an environment in which students can learn both in and out of the classroom are fantastic! Please join us if and when you can!
October also brings the close of our first grading period. I hope you are spending time speaking with them about their school day and talking about highs and lows. These small conversations build connections and show students the importance of school. Further, it's my hope that your child is coming home excited about his/her learning and the activities they are doing in class each week! If you find this is not the case please communicate with your student's teacher.
Finally, thank you for your partnership and support. It takes all of us to help our students and school be the best we all possibly can be!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Hammill
Principal

Mexico’s Independence Day Celebration
On Friday, September 14th, the Mexican students at PVES in grades K-5 were invited to a special program in the ELL room. Jacinto and Sandy Hernández spoke about the importance of Mexico’s Independence Day and how in 1821 Mexico became free from Spain after 11 years. Jacinto and Sandy played their guitars and sang a famous Spanish song with the children, called “Cielito Lindo”. We also saw a movie about the Battle of 1810 when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla began the fight for independence from the Spanish. All the students enjoyed delicious corn on the cob served with mayonnaise, cheese and chili powder made by Sandy Hernández. We all waved our Mexican flags and shouted, “Viva Mexico!” We had a fun time.
Nosotros ondeamos las banderas Mexicanas y gritamos, “ I Viva México!” Pasamos un buen momento. İ Viva México!
Fall Pictures
Order forms were sent home on Friday. Pictures need to be ordered in advance for Fall Pictures. Orders will need to be received before the day of pictures. School pictures are the only fundraiser we do for our school. While we don't make a lot of money off these, we do appreciate your orders!
Mobile Dentist
On Wednesday, Oct. 10th the mobile dentist is coming to PVES. Permission forms were previously sent home with students. They will provide an exam, cleaning, fluoride, sealants and x-rays as needed. In the past they have also made recommendations to see a local dentist for any further dental work that they feel needs to be done. Only students with a returned form will be seen by the dentist that day and forms need to be turned in by Oct. 9. If you need a form or have further questions, please contact Nurse Laurie.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month
While we work to stomp out bullying every day here at PVES, October is a month in which schools and organizations make a concentrated effort to call attention to their efforts to eliminate bullying and emphasize the importance of community and caring within their settings.
Here at school we will be discussing this theme throughout the month both via morning announcements and through our character education time with classes.
