OPALS Tip of the Day

October 22, 2018

Do you have new copies of existing items in the catalog that don't seem to show up?

OPALS programming has gotten better and better with regards to merging records. If you add a holding onto an existing record, or a batch gets added in and you wonder why the new copy of Dog Man isn't showing up, here's what you need to do:

1. Go to items-->import

2. Look at your imports and see if anything is "pending" in the pink column. If there's a number other than zero there, click on it and prod OPALS to merge whatever is in there. It means that OPALS has detected that the incoming record matches existing records and would like you to merge them.

3. Decision...merge "new to existing"? Or "existing to new"? If the new record is much better than the old one, merge to the new record. If you know that the existing record is fine, and you like the way you have the local holdings set already for that title, go "new to existing".

4. Once you merge the records, they will then show up in the catalog and will be able to be checked out.
