Flintlock was a term for any firearm based on the Flintlock mechanisim. The Flintlock was introduced in the early 1700's. The Flintlock was rapidlly replaced earlier with the firearm-ignition tecnologies such as the doglock, matchlock, and wheellock mechanisms. The Flintlock pistols were used as self-defense weapons and as a military arm.
Flintlock pistols came in a variety of sizes. The largest Flintlock was 20 inches. The Flintlock was one of the most common weapons in the Revolutionary War.
