Welcome to Week 16!
December 17, 2023
Dear Sumner Danbury Families,
We hope this newsletter finds you well and in good spirits as we enjoy the joyous holiday season. It has been a fantastic week at our school, filled with meaningful events and celebrations. Our December PBIS Wednesday Morning meeting this week centered around the theme of kindness. Witnessing our students come together to celebrate each other's acts of kindness was truly heartwarming. It's a joy to see the positive impact of such values in our school community.
At our monthly staff meeting, we had the honor of recognizing Mrs. Deborah Coyle, our outstanding office manager, for her dedicated years of service to the Sumner Danbury community. Ms. Coyle was presented with the Challenge Coin as a token of our appreciation for her unwavering commitment and contributions to our school.
As we enter the final week before winter break, let's come together to embrace the holiday spirit. Our school is truly a special community, and your continuous support is what makes our school such a special place. We appreciate each and every one of you for contributing to the success and positive atmosphere of our school. Thank you for your ongoing support, and we look forward to creating more wonderful memories together in the coming year. Wishing you and your families a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year!
Warm regards,

PBIS
Our behavior plan is based on the Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) program, which is an approach to teaching and supporting positive behaviors and meeting the needs of ALL students. This schoolwide approach to discipline focuses on building a safe and positive environment in which all students can learn.
Sumner Danbury holds assemblies to go over the school and playground rules. At the assembly, the school rules are reviewed for new and returning students, and they get a chance to learn more about the positive behavior incentives program.
Our discipline plan is based on teaching and acknowledging positive behavior expectations. These expectations are based on our school motto: Be Kind, Be Responsible, Be the Best You Can Be!
Positive behavior is expected to be demonstrated throughout all settings on campus. To reinforce these expectations for our students, posters are present in classrooms and around campus with specific expectations for each area. Positive behavior expectations for all areas of campus are compiled on a Behavior Matrix below.
Behavior Matrix
The behavior matrix is a detailed description of expected behavior in each setting of the school. For example, in the lunch area it is Kind to say “please” and “thank you.” It is Responsible to stay in your own space. The matrix is posted in classrooms, around school, and shared with families.
Teaching Expectations and Recognizing Positive Behavior
Teaching Expectations
Throughout the school year, students are taught how to behave according to our schoolwide expectations. Teachers help students learn what the expectations “look” and “sound” like in every setting during the school day. Student leaders also help teach the expectations. These lessons are re-taught and reinforced throughout the school year.
Positive Behavior Recognition
Acknowledging and reinforcing positive behavior is one of the best ways to change inappropriate behavior and encourage appropriate behavior. At Sumner Danbury, each student has the opportunity to be recognized for positive behavior through earning Dolphin Dragon Dollars, given by staff across campus. In addition to the immediate positive recognition when receiving the dollars, some students are also recognized in our morning announcement drawings, our Golden Lunch Table, and our Morning Meeting recognition with our High Five Tunnel. Periodic schoolwide recognition activities also take place.
