Ms. Flaugher
Greetings Hilltoppers!
It’s hard to believe that we have already completed our first nine weeks. October was an exciting month as we welcomed back to the building our students who chose the hybrid learning model. I am so proud of them and how they have quickly adapted to the new procedures.
While we have transitioned to this new phase and have a limited number of students in the building for in-person learning things are still busy. Our Environmental Action Club volunteered this month with Lynchburg Parks and Recreation. Our student-athletes are continuing practices bolstered by the exciting news from the VHSL that contests will begin in December. Glass Theatre finished with Superior Ratings in the Virginia Theatre Conference State-wide competition held last week, competing against 28 high schools across the Commonwealth! Many other clubs and organizations have continued to connect with our students virtually. To find out more about these opportunities I encourage you to sign up to receive our daily announcements by emailing Laura Wise at wiselw@lcsedu.net.
All families should have received correspondence from Lynchburg City Schools on October 30, 2020, “Important Information Regarding Changing Your Learning Option.” If you did not, please contact us and we will be happy to send that information to you. I want you to be on the lookout for a form that will be released on Monday, November 2, 2020, for use to indicate your choice for the second semester. This form will be emailed to you. I realize this request comes early in our new phase but it is necessary to provide us plenty of time to review requests. There are many aspects of the planning process; transportation, meal service, social distancing requirements/classroom space, staffing, and cohort size. For additional information, I encourage you to refer to our division website lcsedu.net and our social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) for additional information.
In closing, I want to thank you for your continued support and feedback. On behalf of all of our teachers and staff, we appreciate your kind emails and thoughtful gestures. I wish you and your family the very best. Stay safe and healthy!
Sincerely,
Rose E. Flaugher, Principal

AP Students
I. The deadline for ordering exams is coming up fast. At this time, there are 18 students who have not yet registered for all their exams. Emails have been sent to these students and their parents as well as messages left on home phones. Please verify with your student that he/she has logged on on myap.collegeboard.org and signed up for an exam for each AP class being taken. Note also that AP Gov't is actually 2 courses, US Gov't in the fall and Comparative Gov't in the spring. Thus, Gov't students have to register for two exams for that class.
II. Thank you to those who have paid for AP exams. Reminder that test fees should be paid as soon as possible. The easiest way to pay is by using MySchoolBucks. See steps below for getting set up and for paying any AP exam fees that you still need to cover:
Visit https://www.myschoolbucks.com
Login (or create an account) --- New users will have to choose LCS & put in the credit card they wish to use
Choose SCHOOL FEES (school store)
Choose Browse All Items
AP Test Fee is on the first page; click on View Details
Amount is $40/test; however you can change the fee amount to $15 for students who qualify for a reduced fee waiver which must be submitted ASAP for AP testing.*
Select student (or add student with ID number if first time using MSB)
Put in number of tests to be taken
Click on Add to Basket
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Wise at wiselw@lcsedu.net
*Fee Waivers: Eligible students can qualify for fee waivers for College Board assessments, PSAT/AP/SAT or ACT testing, college application, etc. Please complete this form and return ASAP if you are eligible for a fee waiver, Fee Waiver Form
If there are any LCS textbooks or library books at your house from a prior year, please return them at your earliest convenience to any LCS school. The librarians at each school will process the books and return them to their home schools. For example, if you have any E. C. Glass textbooks and/or library books but Paul Munro is closer to your home, you may drop the books off there and they will be returned to us.

Glass Theatre
Glass Theatre students made Glass proud in the Virginia Theatre Association's first Virtual Conference earning the top "superior" rating among 28 high schools in the Commonwealth. Senior designer Jessica Williams placed 3rd in the state for her set design and the Glass Theatre tech team took home a tight placed second place in the Tech Olympics. Big shout out to students who have been hardworking, focused and creative!

Attendance
Regular Attendance
Regular attendance helps our students excel in learning.
Lynchburg City Schools is checking student attendance on a daily basis. We need all of our students, whether they are remote learners or in-person (hybrid) learners, to be involved with school every day.
Parents, guardians, and families, you are essential partners in promoting good school attendance even in this most challenging time. When a student misses one day or one lesson, that means they may have missed something critical to their understanding of the next several days of instruction.
High schools will be checking attendance each day using a daily attendance question. Beginning Monday, November 2, hybrid AND remote-only students will be required to log into their Homeroom Google Classroom each day by 3:00 p.m. and respond to the Daily Attendance Question.
If students do not complete the daily attendance check-in as outlined above, beginning the week of November 2, 2020, families will receive an automated phone call letting them know that their student was marked absent on the previous day. If the student or family believes the recorded absence is in error, please reach out to the school. ! #AttendanceMatters #Hilltoppers #Dare2Lead #TogetherWeKeepClimbing

Remote Learning Tips
Are you and your student struggling with how to structure the remote learning school day? Having trouble navigating Google Classroom? Need some ways to manage your stress?
Luckily, a team of Hilltopper teachers put together a resource to help give students ideas on ways to be successful: setting up a schedule, navigating Google Classroom, stress management, brain breaks, what a virtual learning day could look like, and more! These were created in the hope that one or more of these resources will help you become even more successful this school year (and beyond)! Here is a short, one page resource for students as well as a more detailed set of slides for families.

Nurse News
New Nurse
We are excited to welcome our new school nurse Jill Wood.
Medical Conditions
If your child has a chronic health condition such as asthma, diabetes, a seizure disorder, or a
food allergy requiring an epi-pen the school division requires that the school clinic have a Health
Care Action plan that is signed by a physician and parent. The Action plan can also include
permission for medication.
See attached links for Health care plans that can also be found on the LCS website.
Virginia Diabetes Medical Management Plan (DMMP)
If your child does not have one of the above chronic illnesses but requires medication while at
school the clinic must have a Physician/Parent Authorization to Administer Medication form.
This form must be completed and signed by both the parent/guardian AND the physician. While
we highly encourage parents to make every attempt to give their student’s medications at home,
we understand that there are circumstances that will require your student to take their meds at
school. Please consider the following guidelines for medication administration by the
nurse/clinic while your student is in school:
●A parent always has the right to come to the school and administer medication to their student at
any time during school hours. .
●A Physician/Parent Authorization to Administer Medication form must be completed, signed
and dated by both the prescribing physician and the parent. A parent/guardian should turn
in this form with the medication to be given at school.
●No medication (including over the counter medications like Tylenol and Advil) will be given
without a signed authorization form that is complete.
●All medications must be brought to the school by the parent/guardian. Medication must be
signed in by both the parent and the nurse/school designee. Please allow 15 minutes in order to
accomplish this when you come to the school. Medications may not be brought to school by the
student. Prescription medications must be in the original pharmacy bottle containing the
student’s name, medication name, dosage, route, and frequency.
●Over the counter medication must be in a sealed, original container. The nurse can not
accept any opened containers.
●Students are to report to the clinic at the time their medication is to be administered.
●The parent/guardian must bring in more medication when it is needed.
●It is the parent’s responsibility to pick up medication at the end of the year. No
medication will be kept over the summer or until the next school term.

LCS Updates
LCS Update
LCS Families, First, we would like to thank each of you for your dedication to the students during the first weeks of school. Students have been transitioning to in-person (hybrid) learning over the last four weeks, and we are grateful for your cooperation and flexibility during this transition. Collectively, staff, students, and families are doing everything possible to make schools a safe place so that learning can continue. We appreciate the efforts everyone is taking to wear face masks or coverings, to physically distance, and to wash their hands frequently, not just when in schools, but also when they are outside of schools. Please continue doing this as we move into the fall.
Below you will find new Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) that have been posted on our Return to Learn webpage. At this time, we are asking LCS parents/guardians to consider if they want to change their child’s learning model option for the second semester, which will begin on January 19, 2021.
Can I request a change in my child’s learning model option for the second semester of 2020-21? Yes, as long as you submit this request by November 16, 2020. See details below.
Please note that this will be the last opportunity to make changes (from remote-only to in-person learning) until the end of the 2020-21 school year.
Is my change request guaranteed? No. We will do everything we can to accommodate the change but cannot guarantee it. If we cannot accommodate your request at this time, your child will be placed on a waiting list for availability based on cohort size, classroom space (social distancing requirements), transportation, etc.
Why are you asking for a decision so soon before the January 19th start date? There are many aspects of the planning process, including transportation, meal service, social distancing requirements/classroom space, and cohort size. In order to best prepare for our students and provide timely feedback to families, we need to gather information now.
How do I let LCS know that I want to switch my child’s learning model option for the second semester of 2020-21? LCS will be releasing a form on Monday, November 2, 2020 to parents/guardians to change your child’s learning model option for the second semester. This form, which will also include questions about your transportation needs, is due no later than November 16, 2020. There will be no availability for changes after this date. We are asking families to drive their children to school if that is a practical option. Please note that your ability to drive your child to school does not guarantee placement in hybrid, in-person learning for semester 2.
Where can I find the form that allows me to switch my child’s learning model option for the second semester of 2020-21? The form will be emailed to all parents/guardians. The form will also be posted on our LCS webpage and social media platforms.
Will my child’s schedule and teacher remain the same if the learning model changes? A change in your child’s learning model may impact your child’s schedule, including teacher changes.
Can I request a specific cohort for my child? No. We will do our best to place siblings in the same cohort but cannot guarantee a specific cohort. Siblings may be placed in different cohorts depending on the availability of seats on the bus serving the area.
If I am happy with my child’s learning model option, do I need to do anything? No, if you are happy with your child’s learning model option there is no action required on your part. Your child’s learning model will remain the same.
Who should I contact if I am not sure whether or not to switch my child’s learning model option for the second semester of 2020-21? Your child’s teacher(s) can offer the best insight into an individual’s learning strengths and needs. You may also talk to the school counselor or administrator to discuss options that would be the best choice for your child. If your child is a young learner (Grades PK-2) and you would like to move them from in-person learning (hybrid) to a remote-only environment, please be aware that parents/guardians are committing themselves to act as partners in their child’s learning, which requires time during the day or evening.
