Dauphin Island Elementary January 2024
Principal's Corner
Happy New Year and welcome to the second semester of school. I hope you and your family had a peaceful holiday season!
We are moving into a very busy and important time in our school year. During January, we will be administering several Middle of the Year (MOY) literacy and diagnostic assessments. The results of these assessments will provide the school with a snapshot of your child's current academic growth so we can continue to address any identified academic deficiencies. Also, we will be focusing on preparing our students for the upcoming Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP ) for our 2nd - 5th grade students. ACAP is an online assessment designed to provide students, parents, teachers, administrators, and Alabama residents with information regarding student progress toward mastery of the Alabama Course of Study Standards. Students in grades 2-8 take assessments covering English language arts and math. Students in grades 4, 6, and 8 are also tested in science. An ACAP Parent Informational Sheet is being sent home with all 2nd - 5th grade students.
In order for our faculty and staff to effectively ensure your child is reaching his/her academic goals, your child needs to be at school everyday, all day. Regular school attendance plays a huge part in your child's academic success. Our current daily attendance percentage for Dauphin Island ES is 93%. The state of Alabama requires that schools maintain a 95% daily average. The state also looks at the number of our students who are chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing at least 10 percent of (18 or more days) a school year for any reason, including excused and unexcused absences. On our most recent state report card, Dauphin Island ES had 14.2% of students who missed 18 or more school days during the 2022-2023 school year. As a result, we lost points on our total score. Our goal this year is to decrease the number of students missing 18 or more school days from 14.2% to 5%. Let's work together to make sure we reach our goal.
I just want to say THANK YOU for your continued support of our school and for entrusting us to work with your child(ren). We consider it a privilege to work with such a wonderful group of parents and students. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at swilcox@mcpss.com or (251) 861-3864 to set up an appointment.
Respectfully,
Stacey Wilcox
