Memorials
The Lincoln Memorial
The purpose of the Lincoln memorial was to honor the 16th president of the United States. The construction of the memorial took 8 years. It was started in 1914 and it ended in 1922.
The Jefferson Memorial
The purpose of the Jefferson memorial is to honor the 3rd president and writer of the Declaration of Independence. The construction for the memorial started in 1939 and it ended in 1943
Arlington National Cemetary
Arlington is a military cemetery located in Virginia. There are over 400,000 graves there. There have been 10 unknown soldiers in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Audie Murphy is the most decorated soldier to ever serve in the military, and is laid to rest in Arlington. He earned 33 medals, was wounded 3 times and killed 240 Nazi soldiers.
The mast of the USS Maine
The construction for the USS Maine started on October 1, 1888 and it was launched for the first time on November 18 1889. It sank on the coast of Cuba in the Havana Harbor.
The Challenger Memorial
The Challenger Memorial is a memorial to commemorate the men and women who died on the Space Shuttle Challenger. It exploded on January 28, 1986 just seconds after take-off. There were 7 people who died on the shuttle.
The Kennedy Memorial
On November 22, 1963 JFK was assassinated in Dallas ,TX. There are only 2 presidents buried in Arlington, the other was William Howard Taft who died in 1930. His wife Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis is buried next to him. He also has an eternal flame that will never die out.
War Memorials
Vietnam War Memorial
The Vietnam War Memorial was finished on March 26, 1982. The War Memorial symbolizes American honor and recognizes the men and women who died in the Vietnam War. It has over 58,000 names of men and women who died or were missing in Vietnam during the war. Their names are engraved in the black stone.
Korean War Memorial
The Korean War Memorial was dedicated on June 27, 1995. The memorial commemorates those who where killed in action, held in p.o.w camps and still missing. It has 19 stainless steel soldiers in a small area depicted as a rice field in Korea. The soldiers are 1,000 lbs and are reflected off the stone wall.
Iwo Jima War Memorial
The Iwo Jima War Memorial was opened for the public on November 10, 1954. The war memorial honors the men who took Iwo Jima in March on 1945. The memorial is made out of bronze.
National Museums
Museum of Natural History
The Museum of Natural History was established in 1869. The goal of the museum is to discover, interpret and spread facts about human cultures, the natural world and the universe, using a wide variety of science research, education and searches. My favorite display is the T-Rex. It looks like it could jump out at you.
Museum of America History
The museum of American History was founded in 1964. The goal of the museum is to collect, preserve and display the heritage of the United States. It also preserves areas of social, cultural, political, scientific and the military of the U.S. My favorite display is the original Star Spangled Banner from the American Revolution. It is so well preserved, 233 years after the war
Holocaust Museum
The Holocaust Museum was founded in 1980. The goal of the museum is to inspire people and leaders around the world to face hatred and prevent genocide. My favorite display was the depiction of the Auschwitz crematoria. This display really shows where the gassing happened and how many people where together at once.
Landmarks
The Capital Building
The Capital Building was finished on November 17, 1800. The Capital houses the meetings of the House of Representatives and for the Senate for over 2 centuries. Its been through many construction phases starting in 1793.
The White House
The White House was fully constructed before any renovations in September 1817. 43 presidents to date have lived in the White House. The first was John Adams and now its Barack Obama.
The National Zoo
The National Zoo is located in Washington D.C. The most known animals there are the Giant panda, Asian Elephants, Great apes, and big cats. My favorite animal is the Giant Panda. Its my favorite because they are so fluffy and funny.
