Ms. Porter's Monthly Message
Nob Hill Families,
The first semester of school has flown by. This has been a busy first half of the school year. In addition to the teaching and learning that occurs on campus each day, we have had family nights, PTA family nights and the Fall Festival, the Harvest Drive, field trips and our various club are underway. It is important to balance educating our students with extracurricular activities. We are excited by all the various experience available for our students.
Our students will take the F.A.S.T. Progress Monitoring Assessment the week of December 5-8. These results will be compared to the first assessment that the students took in September to show progress toward mastering grade level standards. The results will be sent home the following week and teachers will discuss this during upcoming conferences. Please be on the lookout for this report and be sure to read it for opportunities to support your child at home.
When we return from Winter Break, we will be ending the second quarter of school. It is during this time that your continued support is critical to your child’s success! There are several things you can do to help your child. It is important that your child attend school daily and arrive on time. Make sure you are checking their backpacks each day for communication from the school and the teacher. Be sure to check your child’s homework daily and read each night at home.
We have many opportunities for you to get involved in your child’s education. You are invited to attend our monthly Parent Teacher Association and School Advisory Council meetings and learn more about what happens here at Nob Hill Elementary. Every parent can register to be a volunteer. Once approved, you can attend field trips, help with classroom activities, and help with various events that happen throughout the year. We also have Title One Family Nights that provide you with strategies to help your child at home that you can attend. The more involved you are in your child’s education the better they perform in school.
We wish you and your family a happy holiday season and New Year! May your time off be spent with family and creating memories you will carry with you for years to come.
With warmest thoughts,
Ms. Porter
Mrs. Cruz' Corner
Dear Nob Hill Families,
It has been a busy few weeks at Nob Hill! The students have been working hard in the classroom with their academic requirements, but the students are finding some time to have fun too. Right before the Thanksgiving break, our students enjoyed Field Day. They played water balloon toss, egg race, obstacle courses. The students worked as a team during the hula hoop pass and had to work together to solve a cup stacking challenge. It was a great time for all. We want to thank the parents and families that donated water bottles, snacks, ice pops and tents for the event. Our events are always so successful because of the collaboration of our Nob Hill family!
We missed a few days of school because of Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nicole. Please note that the district has adjusted the school calendar to make up for the instructional minutes lost. January 12th and April 20th were previously set to be early release days and will now be full days of school.
Lastly, be sure to check out the weekly E-News that I email every Tuesday afternoon. This weekly email if filled with what’s happening at Nob Hill and is a great way to keep you connected. If you are not receiving my weekly message, please email me at Susana.cruz@browardschools.com to be added to our mailing list.
I wish you a wonderful holiday season.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Cruz
Assistant Principal

First grade is so thankful to be back together after a wonderful Thanksgiving break! We are ready to learn as we make our way towards Winter Break! In reading we are learning about digraphs (th, sh, ch, wh) and practicing finding story elements. In math we are learning about collecting data. In science we are learning about scientists and water safety. In social studies we are learning about the difference between facts and fiction. We are so excited to celebrate all of the different winter holidays before we go on break! Happy holidays and happy new year!
2nd
We are thankful to be in 2nd grade and have so many things happening in the grade! For Thanksgiving, 2nd grade had our Charlie Brown Thanksgiving where we enjoyed a feast of great snacks and discussed the things we are the most thankful in our lives. For reading, we are in the midst of unit 3 and getting to know our government, the vocabulary behind it, and understanding the different ways the government effects our every day lives. For math, we are almost done with Topic 5 and all of the different ways to subtract. We have the Winter Wonderland holidays coming up, so please keep an eye out if your teacher sends home a list to donate to the festivities. These wouldn't be possible without your support!
Happy December and last month of 2022! In our current unit, students are reading different versions of fiction texts with the same characters. They are synthesizing information to understand that narrators and characters have different perspectives, or ways of looking at the story’s events. Students recognize that we can learn about ourselves—and others—by examining and respecting others’ perspectives.
In math students explore place value and numbers to 10,000 as well as rounding to the nearest 10 and 100! Third graders are also diving deeper into photosynthesis and seasonal adaptations! We are excited for the GABIE bus field trip on December 12.
Keep reading and practicing multiplication and division facts over the break! We look forward to a productive 2023 with you!
4th
Fourth grade is gearing up for the second round of the FAST Assessment next week. We will be taking the reading assessment on December 7th and math on December 8th. We are currently working on Topic 5 in math. Topic 5 focuses on developing understanding of finding whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and 1-digit divisors. We will be using methods based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. In reading, we are finishing up Unit 3- Government in Action. In this unit, students will read informational texts and fictional stories about the interactions between citizens and government. In science, we are finishing up our unit on changes to land. Please remember to have your child practice multiplication facts and read at least 20 minutes each night.
5th
We can’t believe that we are almost halfway through the school year!
Our 5th graders have been working hard to master the skill of dividing whole numbers by 2-digit divisors. They have learned multiple strategies like the distributive method, partial quotients, and the regular long division method. Please take some time every day and give them a problem to practice, as this is a hard skill for many of them to master. Our next topic will also focus on division, but this time of decimals.
In reading, we have been working on informational text again. We are using the topic of the American Revolution to analyze multiple accounts of the same event. The students are learning about the different key event like the British Acts, the Boston Massacre, and the Boston Tea Party that led to our independence from Britain.
Our JA Biz Town field trip is coming up this month on December 16. Students must bring a bagged lunch for that day, or they can request a cold lunch from the cafeteria. Thank you so much to all the parents that have volunteered to chaperone this field trip. You will be receiving information this week about the next steps.
Before winter break our students will be participating in an engaging room transformation to review everything we have learned about matter. Please be on the look out for a flyer from your child’s teacher on items that we will need to make this transformation a success!
The 5th grade team wishes all of our families a happy holiday season and we look forward to a great New Year!
