Cardinal Community Learning Center
February 2021
Our Mission Statement
“The Cardinal Community Learning Center's mission is to enhance the lives of students, families, and community members by offering exceptional educational and enrichment opportunities that will promote healthy living, community building and lifelong learning.”
A note from the Director:
The CLC team has been really digging in to continue offering programming opportunities to our students, families, and community members in a virtual setting. We’ve come up with some new class ideas that have been well received. It always amazes me how this team finds the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! I’m proud of their accomplishments and continue to be in awe of the work they do and the creative ways they keep people engaged.
Our team has also taken on the challenge of creating the Cardinal Line district newsletter and has been diligently collecting information and articles that highlight the great things happening at the CFAUSD. The first draft will be completed by the end of February and we hope the final result will be printed and in mailboxes by mid-late March.
May each of you find your “pot-o-gold” and enjoy all the riches that come with it!
Warmest regards,
Andrea
Program Updates
Voyagers Afterschool
Voyagers After School Program
Voyagers is offering several new in-person classes along with some virtual classes.
Diamond Painting
Lisa Forster is leading our diamond painting class which is a combination of cross-stitch and paint-by-numbers. Using an applicator, students apply hundreds of sparkling resin rhinestones, one-by-one, on an adhesive color-coded canvas painting to create a shimmering work of art.
Students had twelve designs to pick from and once they get started, they won't be able to put their applicator down until they are done with their project!
Cardinal Carpenters
Maranda Degenhardt is teaching 3 separate woodworking courses, each being 3 weeks long. Students can register for one of the classes. The woodworking projects include a barn board shelf, picture ladder, and note keeper. This class will help “sharpen” the students woodworking knowledge and they will get to take home their project at the end.
Homework Central
Michelle Schotz is leading Homework Central on Tuesdays and Maranda Degenhardt is leading Homework Central on Thursdays. Homework Central is from 3:45 - 4:30 and students can register at any time throughout the school year.
Virtual Guitar Lessons
We are starting our third 6-week session of virtual guitar lessons. Jeff Jaworski is from Eau Claire School of Music and works with each student at their individual level. Many students have their own guitar, but Voyagers also has guitars for students to borrow.
Virtual Exploring Electricity
Jen Peck from CESA 10 offered three weeks of Virtual Exploring Electricity. In this creative maker class students learned some basic electrical techniques to make their own electrified projects. Jen provided an electricity kit for students each of the three weeks. Students used copper tape and a small battery to light up a lightbulb and also made origami paper lanterns.
Coming Soon…..Career Exploration - In this virtual class, students will learn about scholarships, how to prepare for their careers and be able to listen to many different presenters about possible careers options.
Community Education
We continue to offer learning opportunities with much success as the classes are full to capacity! We’ve come to realize just how many people look forward to the course offerings based on the number of emails and phone calls we receive asking, “what’s next!”
In March we will begin to offer small group in-person classes at the Korger Chestnut Building, following all mitigations put in place to keep people safe and socially distanced. We are looking forward to seeing community people again!
ATOD
Protecting You/Protecting Me Lessons 1-6 have also been completed for Grades 1and 2. The videos along with activity pages and or questions for each lesson were sent to the guidance counselors for their use in the classroom. These lessons are also a shortened version from what is taught in person.
Taping of the six Protecting You/Protecting Me Lessons for Grades 3 - 5 will begin the week of February 22nd.
Thank you to the elementary school guidance counselors for sharing these lessons.
CCLC TEAM
We are excited to be back and ready to offer enhanced learning opportunities to our students, families and community!
