Discovery came in 1st place in the nation in the National Assessment's Ciphering Time Trials. This contest consist of ten rounds in which individuals are presented with three problems to be solved in a total of three minutes. Each round contained both easy and difficult problems and covered a variety of topics. Students received ten points per round if they answered all three questions correctly in the allotted three minutes, seven points for two correct answers, three points for one correct answer, and zero points for no correct answers. The maximum score on the test is one hundred points. At the end of the test, the scores from the ten rounds were added together to get an individual student's score. The team score for middle schools is the sum of the four highest individual scores. (The high school scores are the sum of the individual scores earned by the highest scoring 9th grader, the highest scoring 10th grader, the highest scoring 11th grader, and the highest scoring 12th grader.)

To summarize Discovery's results........

We had five individual students ranked in the top twenty-five in the nation.

Aditi Limaye: 3rd place with a score of 65 Tony Tian: 9th place with a score of 53 Corey Tolbert: 11th place with a score of 50 Justin Byers: 16th place with a score of 44 Shreyas Pant: 25th place with a score of 39

Our team score of 212 was just two points lower that James Clemons 17th place team score of 214. If we had to compete against high schools, Discovery would have ranked 18th in the nation. Bob Jones came in 5th!

Congratulations to the entire team! In addition to the five who earned individual recognition, we had numerous students with test scores in the high thirties.

DMS Represents at the Future City Competition

Mayor Tommy Battle and Mayor Troy Trulock spent Saturday with Ms. Julia West (Discovery Middle School STEM teacher) and her team, as well as 22 other teams competing in the "Future City Regional Competition". The five month competition, in which students design and build models of future urban centers, encourage students to learn about engineering in a challenging way. This year's theme focused on the year 2030, and encouraged students to design their cities with futuristic solutions of growing crops within the confines of their city. The students had very creative designs and had a lot of fun developing their future city! Way to represent DMS!
