Lin Howe Safe Routes to School
- Please promote the Parent Travel Survey (which can be found in English and Spanish on our home page
- Our next Safe Cycling Workshop for Families is October 7. Please promote this (see below)
- October 4 is International Walk to School Day, although your SRTS team is celebrating on October 6, which is great. I'm sure Emily Sachetti has been in touch with details and I'll keep you posted on any VIPs that may be attending. Parking 3 Blocks Away and walking the rest (for those who are able to) is good too. The Lin Howe has a walk to school map, including easy parking areas.
- As you may remember I spent a morning observing school drop off. A few things learned:
As you know the front of the school is awful, especially with some parents parking closer to Farragut and walking to school, but then driving through the school zone to leave. The biggest traffic issues I observed were:
- Not stopping at stop signs
- Double parking
- Parking illegally (red curbs)
- Not yielding to students or crossing guards
- More families are biking to school than ever before. Unfortunately, many are not cycling safely - and a lot are riding the wrong way on Van Buren, to AND from school Please promote the Safe Cycling Workshop on October 7.
- It also appears that more parents are walking to school, and seemingly parking a few blocks away.
It would appear some additional safety messaging to parents would help, which you may already be doing. The key of course is for families to recognize that safety is a community issue and we all need to be on the same team to create a safer, healthier school zone. There are a few things to help in that regard on our website
