Wrapping Up a Month of History

Ancient Times and The Middle Ages 7000BCE - 1500's

We are wrapping up our month of history with a look at Ancient Times and The Middle Ages. Spanning thousands of years, Ancient history laid claim to the formation of empires, periods of war and peace, and observed amazing feats of ingenuity in the construction of temples, cities, and the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The Middle Ages ushered in a distinct period of cultural refinement and expression through art, literature, and architecture in the Age of Discovery. This epoch also gave rise to agricultural innovations and a commercial economy independent of the feudal system. Today, we see the impact of traditions, innovations, and relics of the past in modern governments, economies, and cultures.

Below are some resources with engaging and educational activities for kids! Click on the images to visit the websites.

Homeschooling Advice

10 Tips for Homeschooling Wiggle Worms

It can be challenging to parent and homeschool a little wiggle worm. Are you homeschooling a child who struggles with ADD, ADHD, SPD, anxiety, or other special needs? If so, here are ten tips that can help!

1. Establish Routines

Every parent knows that children thrive on routines, but routines are especially important for children who struggle to maintain attention and focus. Trying your best to adhere to a predictable routine can be extremely helpful.

2. Use Visual Reminders

Set your child up for success with visual reminders. In our home, I have a laminated morning to-do list in my son's room. The kids' bathroom door has a laminated evening to-do list. These lists did not take long to make, and they helped to cut down on parenting nagging and increase independence.

When you do give your child verbal instructions, make sure your child is making eye contact with you. Ask him to repeat the instructions back to you. If you provide written instructions as well, there is a higher likelihood that your directions will stick.

Additional Resources & Opportunities

Every Kid Outdoors Through National Park Services

For the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year, U.S. fifth graders can bring their families to national parks, national forests and grasslands, wildlife refuges and other Department of the Interior, U.S. Forest Service, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-managed public lands and waters for free!

How It Works

Many 4th graders missed out on using their Every Kid Outdoors Annual 4th Grade Pass during the 2019-2020 school year. A new voucher is now available for 5th grade students for the rest of the school year!

With this voucher, 5th graders and their families will have free access to national parks and other federal lands managed by the Department of the Interior from October 28, 2020 through August 31, 2021.

Get free access for 5th graders here.

I am a mom of four children, ranging in ages from 2 to 9 years old, and have homeschooled for the past five years. I consider my homeschooling style to be “eclectic” as I draw from many sources and philosophies.
