Weekly Happenings at Southeastern Elementary
Principal's Postings
Welcome to the October 15th, 2021, edition of Southeastern Scene.
Dear SES Families,
Good afternoon Southeastern Families:
We are so thankful to have a building filled with such a wonderful, creative, hard working school family. We had many exciting events this past week, including a very successful school book fair, and fields trips to Tuttles Orchard, Conner Prairie and Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve. Thank you for supporting us with these activities. We hope you and your family have a wonderful and restful fall break. A few reminders for when we return to Southeastern Elementary following fall break:
- Our window for Parent/Teacher conferences is between October 25nd and November 19th.
- Your child’s teacher will be sending out specific communication on how to sign up for a time that is convenient for you.
At your family conference you can expect to find out the following:
- The standards and skills that your child has been introduced to this year.
- The goals that your child has set for himself/herself with their teacher.
- Their progress on these skills and goals thus far as evidenced by work that the teacher will share with you.
- The teacher will explain how to navigate your child’s report card and how the skills that are addressed on the report card are monitored and assessed.
- You will also receive your child’s MAP scores on their NWEA report. NWEA adapts to your child’s responses to measure your child’s skill level. MAP growth scores help teachers check student performance by measuring achievement and growth.
Please reach out if you have any questions about conferences. We hope you enjoy some time outdoors with your family. We look forward to seeing all of our Explorers back in our building on Monday, October 25th. Safe travels.
Yours in education,
Danielle Chastain

Body Safety Presentations
Indiana Center for the Prevention of Youth Assistance and Suicide (formerly Chaucie’s Place) will be visiting SES again this school year the week of November 1st. Their body safety curriculum, Child Lures Prevention, Think First & Stay Safe, will be presented virtually to students. The lesson will provide relevant, balanced and proven prevention strategies to help families and children increase awareness and knowledge of how to recognize, interrupt, stop and prevent these crimes. As a community, we must think of childhood sexual abuse as a preventable disease. Collaboration between educators, parents and guardians, the medical community, law enforcement and our communities-at-large can proactively protect our children before abuse ever happens.
Topics to be covered:
For K-6 (elementary) we will discuss:
- Using our brains to keep us safe
- Bullying
- Body safety and the idea “my body belongs to me.”
- Brainstorm trusted adults
- The difference between secrets and surprises
- Trusting our “guts” or innate feelings
- The idea that everyone is special
Trained professionals will provide a 45 minute virtual lesson in each classroom at SES. Classroom teachers will also be present in each classroom during the lesson. Mrs. Smith, SES School Counselor, will be available if students have further questions or concerns. A parent resource video can be viewed by visiting their website at www.indianaprevention.org and selecting the “Our programs” tab at the top right hand of the page.
If you do NOT want your student to participate in this program, please complete the opt out form attached below. You also have the option to stop by the school office to fill out an opt-out form.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact Jennifer Smith, SES School Counselor @ jensmith@hse.k12.in.us or 317-594-4340.

Second Steps
We just had week 4 and week 5 of our SEL scope and sequence. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help children both in and out of school. Four units will cover the following:
- Growth Mindset & Goal Setting: Children learn how to pay attention and manage distractions, develop a growth mindset, and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.
- Emotion Management: Children learn how to identify and label emotions and use emotion-management strategies-including stress management for older students, to calm feelings down.
- Empathy and Kindness: Children learn how to recognize kindness and act kindly, have empathy for others and take others’ perspectives, and recognize kind acts and empathy as important elements of building and maintaining relationships.
- Problem-Solving: Children learn how to identify and state a problem, recognize if a problem is an accident, and use the STEP problem-solving process:
S: Say the problem
T: Think of Solutions
E: Explore the outcomes
P: Pick a solution
You will receive a Home Link for each lesson that gives you a summary of what was taught, as well as ways to reinforce the lesson at home. Please click the attachments below for the week 4 and week 5 lessons.

Arriving to School Late
If you are dropping your student(s) off at school after morning car rider, and there are no adult staff members present outside, you MUST park your car, walk your student into the building, and sign him/her in at the table inside door #1. It is a safety concern to let students out curbside without adult supervision, and we want to be certain that all students are safe while entering/exiting the building. Also, students dropped off late will be marked “tardy" in Skyward. A student is considered tardy when arriving after 7:40.
