PEACE POLE
What does the word PEACE mean to you? For some of you, peace means everyone getting along. For some of you it might mean people not fighting or hurting each other. Or, you might think of treating others with respect or being a good listener. For some of you peace might mean no meanness! Each of us have different thoughts about what peace looks likeā¦ but one thing is for sure: We all want it!
Litchfield Owls are known for having good character traits. They are students and staff who value peace. We were given a gift from the Rotary Clubs. It is called a Peace Pole.
Peace Poles started many years ago when a group of people decided they wanted to spread the word about Peace. They wanted people everywhere to think about how important it is that every one of us does our own part toward peace. They decided to make a SYMBOL that could be placed anywhere in the world and to write a peace message on the symbol. In English, the message says: May Peace Prevail On Earth. They are very clever and thoughtful so they wrote the message in Four different languages so that even more visitors to the Peace Pole would be able to read it.
The first ever Peace Pole was placed in a public garden in Japan many years ago. Since then, hundreds of thousands of them have been place all over the world - in more than 200 countries! And now we have one right here at Litchfield Elementary School.
When you have a chance to look closely at your Peace Pole, you will be able to read the peace message on it! The message is written 4 times in 4 different languages, one on each side of pole. The languages are English, Spanish, Norwegian and Vietnamese.
Wherever in the world there is a Peace Pole, people can go to think about peace and remember that peace starts with each of us. For that reason, our Peace Pole will be in the front of the school by the memorial walkway, where everyone in the community can see it.
We challenge everyone, whenever you see the Peace Pole, stop and take time to think about Peace. Remember that peace starts with you!
