Informal and Formal Observations

Informal observations over this next week will continue to focus on looking for evidence of and providing feedback on the seven high impact techniques which teachers use to create a ready to learn environment with a classroom culture that directs student behaviors. These seven techniques were identified and discussed during the January 26th professional development session.

- strategic arrangement of furniture

- behavior management system in place

- pre-established routines and procedures

- teacher artifacts, graphic organizers, and academic anchors

- student work displayed

- positive framing (strategic use of positive reinforcement)

- redirect inappropriate behavior and strategically stop misconduct

What Is The Point Of Anchor Charts?

Anchor charts are “footprints of learning,” which show what is going on in the classroom. The charts remind students of a lesson or academic experience, which they can refer to during follow-up lessons and independent work times. The most effective charts help students transfer their learning across contexts.

This SES teacher directed students to identify similarities they found when reading narrative poems. The similarities were written on "Post-It" notes and organized in groups of like ideas. Once organized the class identified the formal characteristics of narrative poems and worked together to generate this anchor chart.

Focus on Domain 1 - Setting Instructional Outcomes: Suitability for diverse learners

What does highly effective look like?

Teacher:

  • Considers students’ cultures, special needs, and skill level when planning instructional outcomes.

  • Differentiates the learning experiences so that each student works toward achieving the outcomes.

  • Differentiates the assessment of students’ achievement of the outcomes.

  • Plans learning that is culturally, special needs, and skill level sensitive.
