What's happening this Week !
October 5 NNAT Testing (Gr 2)
October 6 3rd and 4th ELAR DCA
October 7 College Shirt Day
October 8 2nd and 4th Math DCA
October 9 End of 1st Nine Weeks
NNAT testing is for 2nd grade only. Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test is a nonverbal test used for qualifying K-12 students for gifted and talented programs. It is a group-administered aptitude test commonly given as an entrance exam into schools' gifted program. The NNAT utilizes shapes and figures to evaluate problem-solving and reasoning abilities of a child without relying on their language skills.
DCA stands for District Common Assessments. Parents should think of this assessment as an end of the 9 weeks assessment on the things that our students have learned. What makes the assessment "Common?" It's that all other elementaries campuses are taking the same assessment so we can identify successes throughout the District as well as identify misunderstandings to improve the teaching and learning process.
NO SCHOOL MONDAY, OCTOBER 12TH.
On Monday, October 12th, students will not have school. Students will return on Tuesday, October 13th. The purpose of this day is for teachers to continue their professional development, plan for the 2nd nine weeks, and strategize to continue improving student performance.
Attendance -- Virtual and On Campus
Parents,
One of the most important factors that determines a student’s success in school is his/her attendance. As we have started the year with two different types of learning options, Magnolia ISD wants to outline how attendance is taken for both types of learning environments. Whether your child is an on-campus learner or virtual learner, state law still requires a student to be present at least 90% of the year.
On-Campus Learners
For students attending on-campus learning, the attendance process remains the same. The student is marked “present” when the student is physically in the classroom. Students who are not physically in class or at school that day will be marked absent.
Magnolia ISD has now made it easier through Canvas for students to make up class work if they missed school. This would not change the fact that the student was absent from class.
There is one exception, If there is approved medical documentation related to COVID and/or the campus has required a student to quarantine due to exposure to COVID the student could potentially be marked present. The attendance rules in this scenario would follow virtual asynchronous instruction (see below).
Virtual learning
For students who are virtual learners, attendance is taken based on synchronous and asynchronous classes.
Synchronous Instruction
On days of synchronous instruction (ex. live instruction via Zoom), the student must be seen in the virtual classroom to be counted present.
Asynchronous Instruction
For days the student has asynchronous classes, all assignments for each course must be submitted electronically by midnight the same day in order to be marked present. For students in grades pre-k through 2nd, all the students are in asynchronous classes so assignments must be completed the same day by midnight.
If students are not logging-in, not attending live classes or submitting work the same day, the student will be marked absent. As stated earlier, the 90% rule for attending school still applies.
The academic success of every student in MISD is extremely important to us and daily attendance whether your child is an on-campus learning or virtual learner is critical to student success.
