Super Horizon – Game On! Walkathon
The walkathon is Horizon PTO’s main fundraiser for the year. These funds are used for the all school family literacy project, field trips, classroom materials and supplies, books and so much more! Information about this event came home today. Students will earn prizes for raising money. We will also be giving away prizes on the Horizon Elementary School PTO Facebook page! You can learn more on the walkathon website: www.horizonwalkathon.com
Teacherlists.com - All of our teachers (including Math, Art, Librarian, Guidance and the school Nurse) have a list of items they want/need to supply their rooms. Go to teacherlists.com, enter “50131” for the zip in the Parents section and select Horizon Elementary School. It’s easy to view their wish list and then pledge items to purchase for them. And it’s really easy to log into the website from your smartphone as you’re standing in the middle of a store to pledge items as you pick them up!
Price Chopper Spirit Lunch - Rushing on Saturday and not sure when you'll find time for lunch?! Join Horizon PTO at the Price Chopper in Johnston for some yummy hot dogs and hamburgers! $5 for a hamburger meal (burger, chips, drink, fruit, and cookie), $4 for a hot dog meal, and $1 slices of pie!! You won't leave hungry, that's for sure! And the best part?? All funds raised will be donated to our awesome school!! Hope to see you there!!
Car Pick-up at Horizon
Car Drop-Off/Pick-up is only at the north entrance. The west entrance is for buses only.
Do not park your car while in the drop-off/pick-up lane. You must remain in your car. Use our parking lot if you must walk your child in.
While in the drop-off/pick-up lane, pull up as far as you can. The first car should be at the first black post.
While in the drop-off/pick-up lane, do not stop your car across the crosswalk.
While in the drop-off/pick-up lane, your child should be ready to leave/enter your car. This stop should take less than one minute.
Your child should exit the driver side of your vehicle.
We appreciate your efforts to follow our procedures. We want our Car Drop-Off/Pick-Up area to be safe for our students and their families!
SNACKS AND BIRTHDAY TREATS
**Please note that this year we have a change in practice with classroom snacks and birthday treats.**
Classroom snacks. Due to many students with food allergies/intolerances, our school has had to be extremely careful with any food items entering the school building. It is a safety issue and something that we take very seriously. In addition, our district wellness policy states that we will “engage in nutrition promotion that helps students develop lifelong healthy eating behaviors.”
We do offer breakfast and lunch at school, so snacks are optional based on your child’s need. If you do choose to send snacks with your child, please choose from this list to remain within healthy guidelines.
-fresh fruit and vegetables prepared in advance (no nuts)
-cheese
-beef sticks
-saltine crackers
-Goldfish crackers
-pretzels
-100% fruit juice boxes or water
Birthday treats: While birthdays are very important days for children, we will continue to recognize this special day in a child’s year. New this school year, we will offer each child a Horizon Birthday Button to wear for the day, in addition to recognition in his/her own classroom and/or community.
However, please refrain from sending treats or ‘treasures’ to share with your child’s class. While we are promoting healthy habits, we are also want to promote equity for all of our students on their special day. (If a child does come to school with treats to celebrate a birthday, we will have the parent pick them up in the office. This could result in disappointment for the child and inconvenience on the parent’s part.)
We realize that both notices above are changes in practice. Mrs. Cornwell is certainly able to answer any questions you may have, or listen to any concerns you wish to share.
Thank you for your part in keeping our students safe and healthy!
Volunteering at Horizon
-are going to be assigned a group of students on a field trip.
-are going to work with students out of range of a teacher. (i.e. working with students in the community area, helping with school picture day)
Basically, if you will be with students other than your own child not directly supervised by a teacher, you should complete the online form. Click here to submit your background check.
All visitors (including those with a completed background check) will be required to scan a driver's license in our Raptor System upon entering the building. This allows us to easily recognize our visitors and track those in our building.
