Principal's message - week 25
Greetings North Plains Families!
Welcome to Oregon winters; cold, gray, and wet!! Thankfully we got our monthly fire drill in last week before the rain came!
Thank you so much to those that took the time to complete the survey. I've gotten some valuable information! So far only a few people have indicated they are coming to math night, so if you are planning to attend, please click on the link and at least answer the 1st question so I can have enough food for everyone! The survey link is: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JW5LN5J
I'd like to address some of the comments that have come up in the survey. One comment was about addressing security at the school with the passage of the bond. What I can tell you is that we are supposed to receive security cameras and have an additional seismic upgrade. There are no plans at this point to change the front entrance, parent drop off and pick up, or any other security upgrades.
Another comment was about reinforcing learning at home and after school. We do have many after school clubs including coding and mad science, and I know there is a person at the NP library that helps students with homework (You will need to call the library for dates and times). Other than that, we don't have after school academic help at this time due to budget constraints, but I would welcome any parents that might want to help run an after school academic support group. We can provide activity buses for students Tues-Wed. Let me know if you are interested!
One person asked about NPES team sports, and all I can say is that elementary schools don't have sports programs in the Hillsboro School District. There are many students involved in community sports programs, some of which I've sent home info through this newsletter and there are flyers posted in the window. We distribute information as we get it from the youth league programs and the parks and rec organization as we get it.
Personal hygiene was another topic brought up in the survey which is so relevant, especially with all of the sickness we've seen here! I know that all teachers address this in the classrooms, and some classes wash their hands several times per day as they enter the classroom. All classes have students wash their hands before lunch, and 4th grade has some specific lessons on the correct way to cough, sneeze, and blow your nose! One thing we could use is more hand soap for the classrooms, so if you would like to donate to your child's class, that would be GREAT!
Finally, there was a parent concern about my posting of student pictures on twitter. Please know that there is a photo opt out option when you enroll and I keep a list of that posted in my office to make sure I don't post the wrong student. If you want your child on that list and for me not to "tweet" a photo or put it in this newsletter, please ask the office for the form and we'll get you on the photo opt out list!
Many really fun things coming up that I hope you can attend!
