GW NJROTC wins Tunstall drill meet
On Saturday, March 25, the GW NJROTC Drill Team competed against other local teams in the Throw-Down Drill Competition, hosted by Tunstall High School. The judges were from the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Military Institute (VMI). GW won 1st Place Unarmed Regulation Platoon, Colorguard, Armed Regulation Squad, JV Unarmed Regulation Squad and Unarmed Knockout (Cadet Ramsey Blewy). The team also had 2nd Place finishes in Varsity Unarmed Regulation Squad, JV Armed Individual, Unarmed Knockout (Cadet JaCory Smith) and a 3rd Place Varsity Armed Individual. The “Soaring Eagles” garnered overall 1st Place for the “Throw-down."
The team wishes to thank all the Administrators, Teachers and Parents for their support during the drill season.
Bonner Theatre holds dress rehearsals for upcoming performances
Students and staff in the spring play, Camelot and Camelittle, at Bonner Middle School have begun to practice for their upcoming show in costumes! The students and staff in the production have been working very hard and cannot wait to perform at the end of April. Tickets will be going on sale soon! Show dates are April 26th-28th, at 6:30 p.m., doors open at 6:00. Tickets will be $5 in advance, and $10 at the door, cash only! Final Big Sort scheduled for Bonner
The Big Sort is an opportunity for citizens to engage in evaluating and prioritizing trends that will impact the future of Danville and Pittsylvania County. The free event is the last in a popular series that has attracted participants from Danville and Pittsylvania County. The Big Sort is a table-top exercise in which participants evaluate regional and national trends for their local impact, certainty, and community readiness. Trends cover society, technology, economy, education, and politics and participants prioritize the trends to inform the work of the Partnership for Regional Prosperity as it continues to engage the community in a future-forward mindset and collaborative strategy that will prepare citizens, business, and government for the change that comes from anticipated growth.
The last Big Sort is scheduled for April 19 at Bonner Middle School at 5 p.m. There is no charge, and dinner will be provided. Participants can register by sending their name to DanvilleBigSort@gmail.com
GW and Galileo students visit Danville Community College
On Friday, March 31, students from GW and Galileo took part in the DCC Knight For A Day event. Students received information about admissions, scholarships, programs, and financial aid. They also took a tour of the campus and visited programs.
Bonner 8th graders visit WSSU
Earlier this month, Bonner Middle School 8th Graders had the opportunity to visit Winston Salem State's HBCU campus for their Middle School Day. They toured the campus and dined with actual students who attend the school while they were there. This event gave students the opportunity to learn about the natural environment firsthand and through primary sources, as well as to be exposed to a world beyond their own.
Meteorologist George Flickinger visits Park Avenue
Students at Park Avenue and Forest Hills enjoyed a weather presentation by Chief Meteorologist George Flickinger at ABC-13. Flickinger discussed the career of a meteorologist, storm safety, and weather that comes with tornadoes and storms. Be on the look for our students tonight on the 6 p.m. news!
Gibson students create model of ocean floor
Gibson fourth grade students were actively engaged in a hands on model of the ocean floor. Students used their math and science measuring skills to make a representation for each feature of the floor to use in their model.
Westwood Winter Sports Awards
On Tuesday, March 28, Westwood recognized its winter athletes during the grade level awards ceremony. Westwood had 15 athletes that had a 3.5 or higher GPA during the second quarter. We also recognized 14 athletes for their accomplishments on the court or mat. Congratulations Tigers.
Constructing habitats at Gibson
First graders at Gibson have been learning that all humans and animals need particular places to survive (Science 1.5a). They built habitats, such as rainforest, savannah, arctic, and ocean, to demonstrate what they learned.

Ruby B. Archie Passport to Reading Challenge
We announced a brand new reading challenge today and we're calling on EVERYONE to participate! We've challenged the Danville community to read one million books by the end of this year through the Ruby B. Archie Passport to Reading Challenge.
Participating is easy: just read a book and log it! Danville Public Schools students are able to access our logging software Beanstack through their Single Sign On portals. The community can log their books at readdanvilleva.beanstack.org.
