Caldwell County was formed from Burke County and Wilkes County. It was named after presiding president of the University of North Carolina Dr. Joseph Caldwell.

Caldwell county is consist of a Board of Commissioners and a County Manager. The Board has five members that appoint the County Manager. Caldwell County is also a member of the regional Western Piedmont Council of Governments.
