Principal's Message:

Kia ora e te whaanau,

Congratulations to the AIMs and UNISS teams for competing at a national level. They represented our school well, showing great sportsmanship. Also, congratulations to Cameron Vickers who has been selected to go to the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea next year in July 2023. He is 1 of only 80 NZ children selected to go. It is a very big honour and exciting opportunity for him. Cameron is currently fundraising to pay for his trip, so if you can support him that would be greatly appreciated.

The arts and culture nights are the 21st and the 22nd of this month. This night is always a great event in our school calendar where we showcase the performing arts. Mr Jordan and his team of students and teachers have been working very hard to put the event together. Come along and support our tamariki.

Please note a change in the teacher only days in term 4. The teacher only day that was planned for the 1st of December has been moved to the second, so that all the high schools in our area can get together to work collaboratively on the NCEA changes. Also, we have had to add a teacher only day in on the 25th of November. This is so that we meet our requirements of 8 over two years. This one is due to one that was cancelled due to COVID last year.

Thank you to those who attended our NCEA night on Tuesday. The presentation from this evening will be posted on facebook for those that missed it, there is also information about NCEA on our school website under curriculum. Course selection for 2023 is starting, if you need support for your child both Pam and Tess are available to help. Please be aware we do not have a static timetable at OAS. We offer all possible courses to Year 11-13 students in the first step of course selection, from these choices and using statistical analysis in our student management system, a best fit timetable is created that has the least number of clashes. This timetable is then released for final course selection. Due to staffing we do have a minimum number of students for a course to run, which is usually about 4 students. If there are less than 4 students in a course, it is possible the course will not run. If you have any questions about courses please see the Heads of Department for course specific questions, or for general information contact Tess.

Ngaa mihi,

Rebecca Bills

ERO Update

Te Ara Huarau is the evaluation approach that the Education Review Office (ERO) is using in our school. This a developmental approach to evaluation where ERO and our school work together over time rather than one off reviews that happened previously. Te Ara Huarau is used in most English-medium state and state-integrated schools.

ERO maintains a regular review programme to evaluate and report on the education and care of young people in the schools. Our school worked alongside ERO to write our Profile Report. This type of report will only happen once as part of our initial engagement with Te Ara Huarau. The profile report reflects our strategic goals and a shared evaluation focus one or more areas that are important to us as we work together to improve outcomes for all our learners. ERO, like us, have a strong focus on equity and excellence. Future reporting will show our progress and achievement towards meeting the goals we have set. Public reports like the Profile Report are published on ERO’s website.

A Board Assurance Report that shows how we are meeting regulatory and legislative Requirements has also been published.

Included in our bundle of published reports is a Provision for International Students report.

Arts and Culture Evening

Coming up in two weeks’ time at Onewhero Area School, we will be staging our Arts and Culture Evening.

This is a fabulous night of entertainment designed to enable young people to take the stage in all the different areas of the Performing Arts. The evening will showcase the many different groups and individuals engaging in different areas of the Performing Arts throughout our school; both within and outside the classroom. Students aged from 6 to 17 will be singing, dancing, acting, and playing musical instruments, in a diverse and imaginative array of acts.

Among the different groups and individuals performing are our Senior Music students, our Kapa Haka Group, our Afterschool Drama Group as well as various bands, singers and soloists.

Come along and help us celebrate the Performing Arts in our school.

The Arts and Culture Evening will take place on Wednesday 21st and Thursday day 22nd at 6.30pm, in the Onewhero Community Hall.

Entry is $5.00 adults and $2.00 children

Dandelions and Dragonflies

The Childcare and Early Learning Centre on the school grounds has now been fully renovated. We’ve extended the operating hours and are now open Mon-Fri from 7:30am-5:30pm. We’ve also been through all the licencing requirements to now be able to provide spaces for babies for the first time, so we can cater from 3 month olds through to 5 year olds. We’ve also installed a Commercial Kitchen and hired a Qualified Chef to provide nutritious meals to children for the first time.
