Principal's Corner
February is the Month of Love
One of the best ways parents show our love is by keeping our children safe. I continue to be concerned about the use of social media sites and APPS by elementary students.
PLEASE BE AWARE: There is a lot of inappropriate content out there.
If your child is using these APPS:
- SnapChat
- Musically
- TikTok… and so many more,
PLEASE log on with your child and review what they are seeing, sharing, following, and who is following them. I encourage you to monitor this activity closely. Like me, you might be shocked at what you find.
A great source of information for parents about online safety is commonsensemedia.org This link has specific articles about individual apps, protecting your child from inappropriate content and much more Parenting, Media, and Everything in Between. Use the Parent Tips tab and select the topic you need more information about.
Let’s keep our kids safe,
Mrs. Fish

New in 2023 is Think Law! A curriculum that considers multiple perspectives, uses evidence to back up our decision-making, and improves our thinking around every aspect of what we do. Students enjoy Think Law and are engaging in great debate with peers!
VPA
The District Gifted and Talented Department is offering the opportunity for all students in grades 3rd-12th who are interested in gifted and talented identification in the Visual and Performing Arts. These areas include: dance, drama, visual art, vocal music, and instrumental music.
Interested students signed up with their classroom teacher.
Students have been working with me to prepare for auditions for identification and services at the school level, and not for SCAPA placement.

Mindfulness In mindfulness, we are learning about empathy and how empathy leads to compassion. Compassion is defined as seeing someone in need, caring about their feelings, and doing something to show that person that you care. Students have been participating in role-play activities to better understand what it looks and sounds like to show empathy and compassion to others. Role-play also helps students prepare for real-life situations that may indicate a need for empathy and compassion.
Art Kindergarteners and 1st graders have been learning about weaving, the elements of art and how we can use art to express ourselves. We've also been traveling around the world in the Art room with 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Some of the types of art and cultures we've looked at are Chinese Blue and White Pottery, decor from Día de los Muertos celebrations, African masks and sculptures, and tile designs and architecture from countries in the Middle East. Soon we'll use what we've learned to make our art work for the schoolwide Art Show at Lansdowne's Multicultural Night on March 16th! Mark it on your calendars!
STEAM Students have been working hard this month on the following learning targets and activities.
K: What is an Engineer?/What is a Scientist?
Forces and Motion
1: Light and Sound
2: Properties of Matter
3: Analyzing Fossils
4: Earthquake Proof Structures
5: Earth’s Four Spheres
Music This month all Kindergarten and 1st grade students have been talking about the elements of drama and have been working on performing a short play for their teacher! Kindergarten is performing The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and 1st grade is performing Is Your Mama A Llama? Ask your child what their part is in their play!
2nd and 3rd grade students will be spending the next two months practicing for the vocal music performance which will be part of our Multicultural night at Lansdowne on March 16th. We will be singing in English, Spanish, and Arabic!
4th and 5th grade students are finishing up their unit on the keyboards. Each student works every week to try to move up a new level to a new song. Ask your child what level they got to on the keyboards!
PE Hello, Good Morning, afternoon and evening parents. My overall focus this semester has been to help kids remember or recall. We have learned to rhyme, use cues and make relationships with the things we do in order to make an inference on how to do. For example, with the locomotor skill hop, we call it the bunk bed. One foot up, one foot down and hop on that one single foot while the other hovers. I encourage you to read to and with your kids, be active with them and take time away from other distractions. I also challenge you to not let them have phones until they’re needed and not wanted. The one game I challenge you to do in or outside, is to play hide n seek with no peek.
Actively,
Mr. Brassfield
Library (K & 1) We have just wrapped up internet safety and digital citizenship in the library. Now we are reading through the 10 books nominated for the Kentucky Bluegrass Awards (KBA) so we can vote for our favorite in March. In February, we will read Invasion of the Unicorns, The Chicken Who Couldn't, Dinosaur Hunter, and The Elephants Came Home. First grade works on research skills, writing, and collaboration in activities based on these books.
