Award Winning Local Author & Educator Visits Charles Boehm Middle School
Local author and middle school teacher Matthew Landis visited Charles Boehm Middle School today to share his love of writing with students. Landis teaches history at Tamanend Middle School in Central Bucks School District and is the author of It's The End of the World As I Know It, The Not So Boring Letters Of Private Nobody, League of American Traitors, and Operation Final Notice which will be released on November 8, 2022.
Landis held three different grade-level assemblies, where he told students that his experience as a middle school teacher provides inspiration for the characters in his books. He talked about his journey to becoming a writer and encouraged students not to be afraid to make mistakes and to "try something that might make you look like a fool."
After the assemblies, Landis had lunch with a smaller group of students and hosted a writer's workshop. During the workshop, he spoke more in-depth about his writing process and walked students through writing exercises that focused on developing a "hook" to engage readers from the start.

Celebrating Día de Los Muertos at PHS
Students enrolled in Mr. Snyder's Spanish 1 class at Pennsbury High School made pan de muerto and created digital ofrendas in Canvas (remembrance alters) today for Día de Los Muertos.
Día de Los Muertos is celebrated in Mexico and other places with large Mexican populations on November 1 & 2. The annual holiday is a time when the Mexican people welcome back the souls of deceased loved ones. Families build ofrendas, or alters, with colorful paper cutouts called papel picados, prayer candles, flowers, and sugar skulls. Photos of departed loved ones are also placed on the ofrendas, along with their favorite food and drinks to encourage them to visit.
Pan de muerto, Spanish for "bread of the dead," is traditionally baked in the days leading up to Día de Los Muertos. According to the Mexican Food Journal, its round shape symbolizes the circle of life and death. The ball on top represents the skull of the deceased. And the pieces that lay across the bread in the shape of a cross signify their bones and tears.
Kids Walking for Kids at Eleanor Roosevelt
Last Friday, the weather was perfect for Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School's Kids Walking For Kids annual event. Each year the students raise money to spotlight different health-related issues. The focus of this year's walk was heart health.
Students raised over $1200 dollars, part of which will be donated to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Part of the money raised will also help establish a future scholarship fund for Pennsbury High School seniors who attended Eleanor Roosevelt who plan to go into nursing or education.
A big thanks to the Eleanor Roosevelt PTO for helping to organize this event. Congratulations on another successful Kids Walking for Kids event. We are, E.R.!
PHS Students to Attend Honor Choirs Festival
Congratulations to Pennsbury High School's Cecelia Troiano (10th grade) and Maahika Kumar (11th grade) on their acceptance into the National American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Honor Choirs Festival. Troiano and Kumar are among the 350 students selected from the over 3,000 who auditioned.
"Mr. Joshua Suslak, accompanist and choir director for Pennsbury, worked very hard on the audition process with all of our students who tried out. Having two students accepted into the National Honor Choir is wonderful for Pennsbury! We are all very proud of our students," said James Moyer, K-12 Choral Music Coordinator
The Honor Choirs Festival will be held February 22-26, 2023, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Walt Disney's Elementary School has a new dragon! Art teacher Suzanne Cassidy designed the new school mascot and students and staff voted on a name. Is it Dizzy, Penny, or Walt? Watch the video to find out!
Penn Valley turned Hogwarts
This week at Penn Valley, fifth grade teachers Lauren Dimitri, Jennifer Gatt, and Erica Krasselt sorted their classes into Harry Potter houses! Students had the opportunity to earn points for each house, dress up as Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, and Ravenclaw characters, and read some of the Harry Potter books to practice their reading skills and learn about great stories.
Fall Fun at Fallsington
Kindergarteners at Fallsington Elementary had a great time participating in fun fall activities with their fourth grade friends. First, they visited the Fallsington pumpkin patch to choose a pumpkin, generously donated by our Pennsbury Partner Snipes Farm. Students were able to take these home for some at-home family fun.
Next, they learned about the legend of Spookly the Square Pumpkin by listening to the story written by Joe Troiano, and creating a delicious Spookly square snack! Next, the kindergarteners completed a pumpkin exploration activity with their fourth grade buddies from Miss Popp’s class. Students had fun measuring how heavy, how tall, and how wide their pumpkins were. They also found out if their pumpkin could sink or float.
Finally, they opened the pumpkins to pull out all of the seeds and separate them from the pulp. Mrs. Tietz saved the seeds and roasted them at home for all to taste and share the next day. Students were able to learn a lot while having lots of fun!
This Week at Edgewood Elementary
Native American and Indigenous Persons Month
In honor of Native American and Indigenous Persons Month, fourth grade students learned about past and present people who represent the culture, heritage, history, and future of various nations and tribes, taught by Building Equity Liaison Mrs. Jennifer Schlosberg. The presentation featured highlighted texts in Edgewood's library honoring those represented.
Improving Communication
Mrs. Davis, Autistic Support Teacher, in partnership with Speech Pathologist Mrs. Sarah Fiorelli, have been working to level-up Edgewood's practices with communication to include all students. The newest addition of support to staff is a lanyard Core Word Board, featuring the top 20 most common communication symbols used by many students. These boards support the Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) language and skill sets.
Día de los Muertos
Under the guidance of teacher Mrs. Crane, fifth grade art classes created colorful Sugar Skull to honor the recent Mexican holiday, el Día de los Muertos, where families welcome their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink and celebration. Students worked through the process of researching, sketching, and creating unique foil skulls as they learned about the holiday.
Environmental Science Club at PHS
On October 22, PHS Environmental Science Club members participated in the Friends of Lake Afton Cleanup Day in Yardley. Students helped to remove nonpoint source pollution and began the tedious process of removing invasive species. This event was a great way for students to network with fellow community members and learn a lot about the work they were doing. Great job representing Pennsbury, Reva Arun (11th), Cole Desrosiers (11th), Eeman Khan (11th), and Grace Asare (11th).
That same day, other members of the club, along with Ms. Realdine’s AP Environmental students, joined Clean Ocean Action for their 37th annual Beach Sweep at Belmar, NJ. The students helped to remove nonpoint source pollution while collecting data on what is being found on our beaches. Some of the most commonly found items include discarded fishing line, balloons, ribbon, cigarette butts, vaping cartridges, and microplastics.
Clean Ocean Action will publish this report. These PHS students played an integral role in this process, made a difference, and helped aquatic wildlife. Thank you to our Pennsbury volunteers: Olivia Ware (12th), Jack Harding (12th), Jade Michalowski (12th), Alexa Pagonis (12th), Colin Unger, Gianna Longo (12th), Brenda Badilla (12th), Taylor Spielberger (10th), and Shivani Bhat (10th).
Pumpkin Experiments at Makefield
On Halloween, kindergarten students at Makefield Elementary were engaged in a science experiment. The students learned that no matter the size or color, a pumpkin will float. Pumpkins float in water because they are less dense than the water, or buoyant. Pumpkins contain a lot of air and are hollow on the inside.
The students also worked together to count the total number of pumpkin seeds inside a pumpkin and were able to choose a design to carve into the pumpkin. (Let's go Phillies!)
Students Present to Administrators on Tidal Power
Today, the 8th grade students from Mrs. Martino's and Mrs. Samples' gifted classes at William Penn Middle School presented their science enrichment presentations on Tidal Power and how it is a renewable, predictable, and reliable energy source. Students worked in pairs to create their own unique slideshow and present it to the class, and after each presentation students were asked to complete a TAG card -- Tell something you liked, Ask a question, Give a suggestion. Special guests in attendance included Asst. Superintendent Theresa Ricci, Director of Elementary Education Michele Spack, and School Board Vice President Gary Sanderson. All presenters did an amazing job!
Presenters in alphabetical order: Will Berkey, Anna Chiang, Debarghy Dhar, Maisarah Dombrowski, Simon Evans, Daniel IJdo, Damien Jeral, Jack Laderman, Colin Oryl, and Danny Seidler
