What is the Hour of Code and What's Happening at the LMC?
When you pull up an app on your phone, you are looking at computer code. The Hour of Code started as a way to get students familiar with computer science and grew into a worldwide event during Computer Science Education Week. At LMES, all students, from kindergarten to grade 5, participated in activities last week to learn about coding. This happened mostly at the Library Media Center, however, coding activities often find their way into the other classrooms and at home as well, as students often love to code and keep doing it after they leave the LMC! Visit Hour of Code and Code.org to learn more, and be sure to ask your children about their coding activities! Also at the LMC, Kindergarten through 2nd-grade students have been Skyping with other students within the district and discussing the Global Read Aloud books by Mem Fox. Thank you to the PTO for hosting Marc Tyler Nobleman as a captivating researcher and author! Students also created their own interpretations of Chupacabras and next week, students will be enjoying MakerSpace activities!
LMES Makes A Clean Sweep At The Fire Prevention Poster Contest!
This year, students from LMES took both first and second-place awards for 4th and 5th-grades in the Fire Prevention Poster Contest. The theme was Fire Prevention: Everyone, Every Day, and we are so proud of Sara Gilchrist and Claudia Burrus (both from Mrs. Williams' 4th-grade), and Alison Salemi and Stevie Bennett (both from Mrs. Poulin's 5th-grade) for their excellent artwork! The students, their families and teachers (and one lucky principal) all received an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the firehouse and were honored by the entire volunteer fire crew at a special meeting!
A Concert To Ring In The New Year
This past month, we were treated to a musical delight, brought to us by the 5th-grade orchestra and band members. Their winter concert, titled A Debut Performance, featured a variety of traditional, seasonal, and new pieces, led by the talented Ms. Walker and Ms. Del Vecchio. congratulations on a wonderful job!
What Is Sketchnoting?
Sketchnoting is a way to put together information, like taking notes or planning a presentation, that incorporates both visuals and written information. 5th-graders tried their hand at Sketchnoting while doing research on specific topics. Check it out!
Learning About The Human Body in Third-Grade!
In Mrs. White's 3rd-grade classroom, students are embarking on independent projects that practice creativity, innovation, and collaboration. One project is the making of a scale-sized human body (about the size of an average third-grader). The pictures show the different parts of the body such as skeleton, circulatory system, and organs.
Wishing All of Our LMES Families A Wonderful Holiday and a Happy New Year!
Our work as educators couldn't happen without the support and foundational skills provided by you, our students' caregivers. Thank you for all that you do and from our family to yours, we wish you a very festive holiday break and we look forward to seeing you all in 2018!
