Our Lady of the Assumption School - 3rd November 2022

OLA News

Ahiahi mārie

Life has been very busy at school recently with our Batten Team at camp, our juniors swimming, hosting a speech competition, Athletics Day and Grandparents' Day. Our tamariki have stepped up and made the most of all these opportunities. We have been delighted to have our community with us again as we celebrated our Grandparents and competed in our school athletics. So much fun and enjoyment at both events - we had two very special days! What we are most proud of is our children. They take part in everything with enthusiasm and pride and are always open to new opportunities!

We wish our Senior Choir all the best as they take part in their next opportunity, the Christchurch Schools' Music Festival on Friday.

Batten Team Camp

Batten Team headed off to Woodend Camp on Monday for three days of fun and adventure. They all looked very excited as they left and a little weary as they came home. They all made the most of this opportunity and challenged themselves by taking part in the camp activities. They have some great stories to share.

A big thank you to Mrs Welsh and her team for organising this amazing camp, and also to the amazing parent helpers that came on camp.

See our Facebook page for more fantastic photos from camp.

Athletics Day

Our School Athletics Day was held last week and what a wonderful day it was. The children were outstanding competitors, striving to achieve their very best. We are very proud of all our children. A huge thank you to all the parents who helped out, Mr Kubiak for preparing the grounds and Hoon Hay School for allowing us to use their grounds. Finally, a massive thank you to Mrs Grant for all her hard work in putting this day together.

A full list of results from athletics day can be found here.

Zone Athletics will be on Tuesday 8th November at Nga Pua Wai. We have 73 children competing and would really appreciate some parent help. If you can parent help on the day, please email Kim Williams on kim.williams@ola.school.nz

Grandparents' Mass

It was lovely to be able to celebrate our grandparents again at our Grandparents' Day. We really enjoyed meeting all the grandparents and family members who joined us for our Grandparents' Mass and stayed to enjoy lunch with their grandchildren. Our tamariki were so delighted to have you spend time with them at school. A very special day and one which we always enjoy. Grandparents, you are very special people in our children's lives!

Kahui Ako Primary School Speech Competitions

This year our school hosted the very first South West Kāhui Ako Speech Competition. Students from St Peter's, St Bernadettes, Our Lady of Victories and Our Lady of the Assumption competed against each other. Each school sent their speech winner in Year 5, Year 6, Year 7 and Year 8 to the competition. Speech giving is always very challenging within your own class and school and even more so in front of your peers from other schools. Our school representatives were Carys Y5, Molly Y6, Tandia Y7, and Pera Year 8. You all stepped up to the challenge and delivered your speeches so well.

The competition was judged by students from Villa Maria College (including our very own ex-pupil Ruthie Atherton).

Congratulations to Carys from our school for winning the Year 5 age group! A great achievement.

Vinnies Christmas Appeal

Once again we will be collecting gifts on behalf of the St Vincent de Paul Society for those families who find Christmas a real struggle. If you would like to donate a gift, we will be collecting these in the school office until 9a.m. Tuesday 29th November.

These gifts can be for babies through to 20 year olds.

We have been asked to not give toy guns (Nerf guns are okay) or alcohol.

Please do not wrap the gifts. This allows parents to go to St Vincent de Paul and select gifts that are suitable for their children.

We understand that donating gifts may not be possible for all families, but if you were able to it would be gratefully appreciated.

Mana Ake Drop In Sessions

My name is Victoria and I am proud to be the Mana Ake liaison for your school. Mana Ake can provide a range of support, from one on one work with kids during school time, to advice and guidance for parents at drop-ins. I can help with anything from anger or anxiety, to behavioural challenges… even screen time and sibling rivalry. I am a registered social worker, and mum of a ten year old, and three cats!

If you would like to have a chat with another parent who also has lots of resources and tips to share you can book a drop-in session by phoning the school office. If you think Mana Ake support may be right for your child, you can discuss this with their classroom teacher.

Each session will begin at 2.00 and take roughly 30-45 minutes. Session dates are:

Tuesday 8th November

Tuesday 22nd November

Principal's Awards

Every fortnight we celebrate the amazing work that happens in our classrooms by awarding a Principal’s Award to a student in each class.

For the first time this year we were able to gather together as a whole school to present Principal Awards! With all the Level 2 and 3 restrictions this year, Mrs Cummings has been presenting them team by team, so it was extremely special to be all together as a school to celebrate the learning achievements of many of our students.

Congratulations to (front row, from left), Kalyani, Eliza, Emma, Jett, Florence, Eliza, Annabelle and Frankie, and (back row, from left), Sebastian, Marco, Arie, Jahmia, Isla, Liliana, Cameron, Harper, Noah, Nicholas and Ollie.
