November & December Highlights
Throughout the last month, Yorkville students have participated in many exciting learning opportunities and celebrations!
The first graders spent the month of November learning about Native Americans. This unit of study was followed by a trip to the Milwaukee Public Museum where students had a guided tour of the Native American floor. The students met an intern who is a member of the Turtle Clan of the Oneida Nation. All of the tour guides were very impressed with the kids' background knowledge and their ability to answer questions! It was a fun filled learning experience! First graders welcomed the holiday season by inviting their fifth grade buddies to join them in making gingerbread houses!
Second grade students were introduced to coding and had the opportunity to create commands to control Dash the Robot. The second graders enjoyed a visit from a foreign exchange student from Germany. Kimi helped students learn about Christmas in Germany! The students enjoyed some treats from Germany too.
The third grade students conducted a science experiment exploring force and balloon aircrafts. The students also had the opportunity to further their coding skills and worked with Dash the Robot. After earning their PBIS goal, third grade students had a surprise guest visit them. Students participated in an interactive Tae Kwon Do presentation led by Master Chey. All third graders received two free classes. The third grade students also welcomed Danny Baker who served as the lunch time DJ!
Fifth graders applied their knowledge of the food chain by playing a game from Mystery Science.
Sixth graders applied their math skills by measuring to 1/16 of an inch and to the nearest millimeter. Students also used unit rate to identify the better buy!
Seventh grade students used their engineering and design skills to build a structure that would hold up against wind and rain.
To celebrate the season, the primary students put on a concert and invited their grandparents to attend the show and celebrate the holidays!
