Novi High School Friday Update
February 14, 2020
From The Desk of Principal Carter
I would like to commend the entire student body for your high level of engagement celebrating UMatter Week 2020. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of the smiles that the therapy dogs brought to our school community on Tuesday this week. The most thought provoking aspect of the week was the Compassion and Wellness Webinar featuring Dr. James Doty. His words of wisdom would be something I would like every single student, staff member, parent or community member to hear. I will share with you the following notes that I gathered from the evening:
You won’t have peace on the outside until you have peace on the inside
Be nice to yourself
Breathing slowly in and out can have a positive impact on how your body works
You need to be present in order to be focused
You manifest your dreams and aspirations by engaging your senses. Write a list of what you want to do. Visualize it. By doing so, you will have a greater likelihood to accomplish an item on your list
Follow the Alphabet of the Heart: C-Compassion, D- Dignity, F- Forgiveness. G- Gratitude, H- Humility, I- Integrity, K- Kindness, L- Love
Success is not an end point. One should focus on the journey, not the outcome
A life of meaning is about helping other people
Look at failure as an experience. It is a way to learn. We cannot avoid failure. If you don’t have failure, then it means you never tried
Strive to make one person’s life better every single day
The most poignant quote from my lens was when he said, “College isn’t for everybody. Education is for everybody.”
Our week concluded this morning with a clap in at all school entrances and free hot cocoa in the Atrium. I loved having the opportunity to pass out hot cocoa, wish the students a happy day and to let them know that they are genuinely cared about and that they truly matter. I am forever grateful for the efforts of our Student Mental Health Committee this week. You were able to make a large high school feel small and you brought so much joy to our community. The work of the SMHC will continue marching on. Any student who is interested in joining our cause is free to attend our next meeting which will be held on February 19, 2020.
Yours in leadership,
Nicole Carter
