Beckman has TWO Bank of America Student Leaders

Congratulations to Christine Chang and Andrew Hwang for being named Bank of America Student Leaders! A field of roughly 6000 applicants nationwide was narrowed down to 220 student leaders. Of those 220 students, 5 were from Orange County. Of the 5 from Orange County, TWO were from Beckman! The two students took part in an eight-week paid internship over the summer with a nonprofit organization selected by the bank. This internship is designed to provide opportunities for the students to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on work experience, while raising their awareness of community issues addressed by their Host Organization. They also were invited to take part in a week-long, all-expense paid Student Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C. in July. Conducted in partnership with the Close Up Foundation, the Summit introduced students to aspects of civic, social and business leadership and provides them with knowledge and skills they will use throughout their life to create positive community change.

Club Rush 2017

Beckman’s Club Rush is a lunch event dedicated to students at Beckman to explore, sign up, and get directly plugged into a community affiliated with their area of interest. With approximately 100 clubs to choose from, the campus was filled with table booths, posters, flyers, and the passionate voices of club members advertising their organizations. Needless to say, there wasn’t one table without a line of people waiting to sign up with numbers shooting up to 250 member sign ups.

AddictionPros - A Simple, Fast, and Safe tool for Mental Health, Drug, and Alcohol help

Tustin Unified School District has partnered with the organization AddictionPros for the 2017-18 school year. AddictionPros is an online system that allows staff and parents to search for providers’ information related to treatment options for various forms of addiction/mental health issues in the community. AddictionPros will provide access to TUSD staff and families by creating a unique login and URL. It will give access to parents to a website from the comfort and privacy of their own home.

Principals, assistant principals, counselors, nurses, FIRST, and community liaisons attended a training to learn about the program during the month of September. The link will be available on the District and school Web sites under the resources tab for the community - addictionpros.org/tustinfamilies. This is a unique opportunity for individuals to reach out for assistance within our TUSD community.

Environmental Science at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands

131 students went on a field trip to the Bolsa Chica wetlands. The students took a guided hike of the wetlands with a docent discussing the plants and animals that are native to the wetlands or that pass through on a their migration path, and the ecological importance of the wetlands. In addition they did two different labs: 1) water quality testing in various locations for the wetlands database, and 2) surveyed various areas to assess the quantity and number of native plants.
