AMS Book Club News
AMS students had the opportunity to Skype with Mr. Vince Vawter, author of The Paperboy, our first book club choice this school year. The novel is loosely based on his own life and his experiences growing up in the South in the 50s and 60s, witnessing racism and facing the challenge of living life as a "stutterer". Motivating book with powerful characters that teach us that nobody's life is perfect!

Notes with the Nurse
As we enter Cold/Flu/Stomach Virus season, it is a great time to remind everyone that there
are several common sense things that we can do to help prevent the spread of illness both
at school and at home.
- Eat right and get plenty of rest.
- Practice good hand hygiene by washing hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing or coming into contact with someone who could be sick. Alcohol based hand sanitizers may also be effective, although not as much as washing with soap and water.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not your hand.
- Contain your germs by not touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Keep your child at home when sick, until symptoms cease.
That last one is really important! While excellent school attendance is very important, sending kids to school when they are sick does not help. Please know that if you send your child to school and illness symptoms are present or develop during the day, we will ask that you pick your child up, particularly if he or she has a fever, is vomiting, has a frequent harsh cough, or has a very red throat and/or a rash.
Please take the time in the morning to observe your child to be sure they are feeling well before sending them to school. We will be very strict with our exclusion policy during virus season to help protect your children, our students and our staff. When your child is sick, we also ask that you notify the school and let us know what symptoms your child is experiencing so we can watch for any patterns in the illness.
Guidelines for returning to school after illness:
- Fever less than 100 degrees- without the use of fever reducing medication such as Tylenol/Motrin/etc.
- No vomiting or diarrhea in the last 24 hours.
- If prescribed antibiotics, return to school only after the student has been taking the antibiotic for 24 hours.
- Keep student home for severe sore throat, excessive cough producing phlegm, severe headache, earache, stomachache, or any illness where the student is unable to eat/drink/sleep or otherwise carry out their normal school activities without pain or discomfort.

The girls finished 15th overall, 3 spots better than last year. The boys finished 6th in the State for 6A in the largest race of the day! We had several PRs to finish out the season, and celebrated with our annual awards banquet on Monday. It has been a GREAT season for our XC Golden Eagles!

Alabama High School Athletics Association Bylaw Of The Week
AHSAA BYLAW OF THE WEEK GRADES 7-12
Scenario: The National Kicking Academy is holding a clinic for all kickers, punters & long snappers on Sunday, October 28th. The camp will be held at local Park & Recreation fields in Huntsville & in Mobile. Several schools have inquired about sending their kickers & long snappers to this evaluation. Question: According to AHSAA Bylaws, should coaches encourage their players to attend?
Rule I, Section 6. Outside Participation Rule:
A student who is a member of any school athletic team (grades 7-12) may not participate (includes practice) on a non-school team in the same sport during the school season of that sport. A student who is a member of any member school athletic team may not participate on a non-school team’s activity”
Note: Private individual instruction is not considered an outside sports activity. Private individual instruction is one-on-one instruction between one athlete and one instructor and cannot be instruction with another player or groups of players.
Note: Member school bowling, golf, tennis, & swimming teams may receive private individual instruction in a group setting ONLY with members of their school team.
Ruling: While this event appears to be an instructional clinic, the AHSAA designates an event of this nature as a camp because multiple athletes will be attending. The outside participation rule prohibits players from participating in any outside event in the same sport while “in season”. Due to the fact many players could be participating in the clinic, this event does not constitute as “private individual instruction”; therefore, coaches should discourage their players, grades 7-12, from attending this event.
Penalty:
The first time a student violates this rule, restitution will be assessed. Any student who violates this rule a second time is ineligible to join that school team for the remainder of that season and fines and forfeitures will be assessed.
Proactive Measures: All coaches must talk with their student-athletes about the outside participation rule and what is allowed regarding participating in camps as individuals during the school year. School coaches & AD’s should discuss the outside participation rule and private individual instruction guidelines with parents during the preseason parent meetings.
